Abercrombie 4-Hit, 2-Homer Night Propels Goldeyes, 13-9
FRANKLIN, WI – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (46-32) beat the Milwaukee Milkmen 13-9 at Routine Field on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Goldeyes remain 4.0 games behind the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for first place and 1.0 game behind the St. Paul Saints for second in the American Association North Division.
Reggie Abercrombie opened the scoring with a two-out, solo home run to left in the top of the first inning.
The Milkmen tied the game in the bottom half on a Manual Boscan triple to right-centre.
The Goldeyes responded with five runs in the top of the second. Kyle Martin led off with a single to left and went to third on a single to left from Adrian Marin that resulted in an error by left fielder Riley Pittman. With runners on second and third, Alex Perez ripped a two-run double down the right field line. Perez went to third on an error by right fielder Adam Brett Walker and scored the Goldeyes’ fourth run on a Kevin Garcia groundout to first. Jonathan Moroney followed with a walk and stole second. Two batters later, Abercrombie crushed a two-out, two-run homer to left.
Moroney led off the top of the fourth with a line drive homer to left-centre. Later in the inning, Dominic Ficociello singled to centre with two outs, setting up a tow-run home run to left from Willy Garcia.
The Milkmen stormed back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer from Walker, a two-run double from Jose Rosario, and a Sam Dexter sacrifice fly.
The Goldeyes re-extended the lead to 11-6 in the top of the sixth when Kevin Garcia and Moroney drew back-to-back two-out, bases loaded walks.
Boscan worked a two-out, bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth that cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 11-7.
Abercrombie led off the top of the seventh with an infield single, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by Boscan. Abercrombie eventually scored on a two-out, RBI infield single from Martin.
Milwaukee chipped away again in the eighth, scoring twice on a Boscan RBI single and an error.
Ficociello drove in Abercrombie with the game’s final run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth. Abercrombie avoided Walker’s throw to the plate by sidestepping Boscan and lunging to the plate underneath the tag attempt.
Brandon Bingel (2-2) was credited with the win in relief. Milkmen starter Derek Heffel (0-3) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits in one and one-third innings. Heffel walked one and struck out two.
Joel Seddon started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in four and one-third innings. Seddon walked one and struck out two.
Victor Capellan closed the game out with a perfect bottom of the ninth.
Abercrombie finished with four hits, four runs scored, and was a double shy of the cycle. With the two home runs, Abercrombie is now just two shy of the Goldeyes’ career record. Ficociello and Martin each had three hits.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Kevin Hilton (3-8, 4.62) makes his Goldeyes’ debut and faces right-hander Jordan Kraus (4-4, 4.00).
