Abercrombie Homers Twice to Propel Goldeyes to Win, 7-2
FARGO, ND – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (41-30) beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 7-2 at Newman Outdoor Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Kyle Martin and Reggie Abercrombie hit back-to-back solo home runs.
The RedHawks scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. With first and second and one out, Chris Jacobs singled home Tim Colwell. After the RedHawks loaded the bases, Leobaldo Pina hit a sacrifice fly to centre that plated Devan Ahart.
The score remained 2-2 until the top of the seventh when with one out, Abercrombie launched his second home run of the game, another solo blast to left-centre.
Alex Perez bunted for a single leading off the top of the eighth, and took second when Ahart made an errant throw to first. Two batters later, Tyler Hill ripped a single through the left side that scored Perez with the Goldeyes’ fourth run.
The Goldeyes added three more in the top of the ninth. Martin singled leading off and stole second. Abercrombie followed with an RBI single up the middle. On the next pitch, Dominic Ficociello slugged a long, two-run homer to right.
Kevin McGovern (10-5) started for the Goldeyes and picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits over seven innings. McGovern walked three and struck out five. McGovern becomes the American Association’s first 10-game winner this season, and also posted his 50th career professional victory.
Joe Filomeno (6-1) took the loss in relief for the RedHawks (45-27).
Michael Tamburino started for the RedHawks and took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on four hits over six innings. Tamburino walked one and struck out six.
Cameron McVey, Justin Kamplain, and Victor Capellan combined for two shutout innings of relief to close out the win. James Harris’ 10-game hitting streak came to an end.
