Aldrich, DeRenzo Help Apollos End Skid, Down Canaries
SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Canaries (15-16) fell 10-7 in the series opener vs. the Houston Apollos (5-26) Tuesday. Mitch Glasser carded four hits for the Birds.
Colby Wyatt (0-2) was credited with the loss for Sioux Falls. Wyatt allowed seven runs (seven earned) and eight hits, including three home runs. Alex Merithew (2-3) was credited with the win for the Apollos. Merithew allowed four hits and one run while striking out two. Ryan Richardson earned the save with 1.1 innings of scoreless ball in the eighth and ninth.
The Apollos hit three home runs in the game to power the victory. Yeiler Peguero, Daniel Aldrich and Blake Berry all went deep. The Canaries briefly took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second before Aldrich’s three-run, top of the third gave Houston a lead it would not relinquish.
The Canaries outhit the Apollos 15-14. The home offense was sparked by Mitch Glasser, who had four hits, including a double, in five at-bats. He also scored a run. Wyatt Ulrich contributed two hits, two RBIs and a run. Mike Hart, Jabari Henry, Zane Gurwitz and Nick Gotta all finished with two hits.
RHP Carlos Pimentel (2-1, 5.45 ERA) will start Game 2 for the Canaries vs. RHP Matt Cronin (1-2, 8.26 ERA) for the Apollos. Start time is slated for 7:05 pm. Gates open at 6:05. Fans can tune into live broadcasts of the game on Fox Sports 98.1 FM and American Association Baseball TV.
