For the fourth time this season the Wichita Thunder played an extra frame against the Missouri Mavericks in Independence. Sadly, for the third time, the Mavericks would come out on top as Alex Brooks spoiled an outstanding outing by Drew Owsley to give Missouri the 3-2 victory.
For the second straight game the Wichita Thunder scored first. While on the power-play, Ryan Rupert passed back to Macoy Erkamps, who blasted a one-timer from the point past Josh Robinson to make it 1-0. His sixth goal of the season came at 7:36 of the first.
Just two minutes later the Thunder would extend their lead to two. With the faceoff in the Missouri end, Darryl Lloyd won the draw to Louick Marcotte, who quickly fired a wrist shot passed Robinson for his 15th goal of the year. That extended his team leading in goals and tied him for the team lead in points.
At the 14:08 mark, the Mavericks would cut their deficit to one. Alex Brooks made a great pass to Andrew Courtney that sent him and Eric Scheid in on a 2-on-1 break. Courtney passed to Scheid who buried the puck in the net for his ninth goal of the season.
It would head the break with Wichita leading 2-1 and also ahead in shots 15-8. In the second, the Thunder would outshoot Missouri 10-8, but it would be the Mavericks that would get the lone goal of the period. Dane Fox passed back to the point to Conner Beackley, who then passed to Matt Finn at the faceoff circle. He drilled a shot past Drew Owsley for his 11th goal of the year and the game was tied.
In the third the Thunder continued to put the pressure on but could not get another one past Robinson. Owsley was equally as brilliant including making a brilliant glove save with about six minutes left in the game, when the Mavericks won the faceoff in the Wichita end and got a quick shot off, but Owsley showed cat-like reflexes in making the save.
The game went into overtime, where the Mavericks would win the contest. Alex Brooks gained control of the puck in the Wichita end and skated by the Thunder defender and in on net. He beat Owsley with a back-hander for his third goal of the season to end the game a little over three minutes into the extra frame. That gave Missouri their third straight win.
Alex Brooks finished with a goal and an assist. Dane Fox had 2-assists for the Mavericks and Josh Robinson saved 39 of 41 shots on him. Drew Owsley saved 25 shots and Darryl Lloyd had 2-assists for the Wichita Thunder.
The Wichita Thunder head to Moline where they will take on the Quad City Mallard tomorrow. The puck drops at 4:00.
