In American Association Daily, the Minor League Sports Report names their American Association Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 3 as chosen by Robert Pannier and Kevin Luckow, with Gary Southshore RailCats lefty Alex Gunn earning Pitcher of the Week honors and Lincoln Saltdogs slugger Brandon Jacobs being named Player of the Week.
Brandon Jacobs, Alex Gunn Honored in Week 3
The Minor League Sports Report has chosen their Player and Pitcher of the Week for the third week of the American Association season. Lincoln Saltdogs outfielder Brandon Jacobs grabs the honors as the week’s top player. Gary Southshore RailCats starter Alex Gunn has been named as the league’s top pitcher.
Player of the Week: Brandon Jacobs, Lincoln Saltdogs
The Lincoln Saltdogs went 5-2 from May 28-June 3, and Brandon Jacobs played a key role in helping the team to move to within 2.5 games of the South Division leading Sioux City Explorers. Jacobs had at least one hit in six of the seven games that the Saltdogs played, going 9-22 (.409), with 4-home runs, 10-runs scored and 12 runs driven in. He also walked 8 times during the week, giving him a gaudy .594 on-base percentage.
The week started out a little slow for the Lincoln Saltdogs’ outfielder. On May 28, Brandon Jacobs was 1-3 with 2-runs scored and an RBI in a 14-6 thrashing of the Winnipeg Goldeyes. A day later, he was 0-3 as Lincoln fell, 6-4,
After Wednesday’s game was delayed until Thursday, Jacobs caught fire. In the double-header, he was a combined 3-6 with 2-runs scored and 4-RBI, hitting a homer in both ends of the double-header. Lincoln swept Winnipeg, taking three of four overall.
Friday, Lincoln began a three-game series with the Sioux Falls Canaries, dropping the first game 10-7. Jacobs was 1-4 with a run and 2-RBI. They would take the next two, scoring a combined 26-runs. The outfielder was 2-3 with 3-runs scored, 2-homers, and 4-RBI in Saturday’s 10-1 victory and was 2-3 with 2-runs and an RBI on Sunday, a 16-5 victory.
Jacobs becomes the fourth Saltdogs player to be honored by the Minor League Sports Report already this season. Angel Reyes was named as the Player of the Week in Week 2 and Mike Tamburino was the Pitcher of the Week following the first week of the season. Chase Simpson was honored by the publication as the American Association Player of the Month for May.
Pitcher of the Week: Alex Gunn, Gary Southshore RailCats
Gary Shoreshore RailCats LHP Alex Gunn was named as the American Association Pitcher of the Week for Week 3 by the Minor League Sports Report. Gunn had an impressive week, going 2-0 in 2-starts. The lefty did not allow any earned runs in either appearance, allowing one unearned run against Chicago on May 28, then tossing the first complete game shutout of the season on June 2 against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
Alex Gunn began the week going 6-innings against the Chicago Dogs in a 4-2 victory. He blanked the Dogs through the first three innings, seeing his shutout come to an end on an unearned run in the fourth. The lefty gave up 5-hits and 2-walks, while striking out 3.
On June 2, he went the distance, allowing 7-hits and no-walks while striking out 7 in a 2-0 victory over the RedHawks. This was a scoreless pitcher’s duel through the first seven frames. Gary scored two in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead, and Gunn made that lead hold. He finished just six batters over the minimum, with 71 of his 93 pitches going for strikes.
Gunn finished the week pitching 15-innings, allowing 12-hits, 2-walks, and one-unearned run. He struck out 10. The lefty lowered his ERA from 5.40 to 2.16 with the two victories.
