Before every at-bat, “Cleveland Rocks” is played for Wichita Wingnuts veteran Brent Clevlen. He has starred for the team in each of the last four seasons and, as the playoffs loom, finds himself on a hot streak once again. A night after going 3-3, Clevlen homered to give his team the lead and the Wingnuts downed the Cleburne Railroaders 5-1. That helped Alex Boshers to earn his 11th win of the season.
The Cleburne Railroaders took the lead in the top of the first against Alex Boshers. Mitch Glasser singled with one out and moved to second on a base hit by Nick Van Stratten. Geraldo Valentin followed with a base hit to left that scored Glasser and it was 1-0.
Laetten Galbraith started for Cleburne, a night after having a big hit in the team’s 2-1 victory. He retired the first batter of the inning before Christian Stringer beat out a ground ball for a base hit. That brought the red-hot Brent Clevlen to the plate, who smoked a ball over the center field fence for his ninth homer of the year.
An inning later, the Wingnuts extended their lead to two. With one down, Richard Prigatano hit his eighth homer of the season, a shot that cleared the wall in left-center to make it 3-1.
Following the early run, Alex Boshers (11-3) settled down and pitched a gem. He found himself in a little trouble in the third when the Railroaders had runners at first and second with two down and an error loaded the bases. However, the right-hander handled the problem himself, inducing a comebacker to end the threat.
His most impressive inning was the fifth when he gave up a one-out triple. He then got a ground ball right back to the box to hold the runner before getting a grounder to second to end the threat. Boshers was pulled after 7-innings. He gave up 10-hits, but just one-run and struck out two.
Mike Devine came in to pitch the eighth and tossed a perfect frame.
In the bottom half of the inning, Wichita extended their lead. Stringer reached on an error to start the inning. With two down, Matt Chavez lined a single up the middle. Martin Medina followed with a single to left that brought home Stringer and a passed ball brought home Chavez with the final run of the game.
Ryan Kussmaul finished off the game, as the Wichita Wingnuts won 5-1.
Brent Clevlen finished 2-4 with a run and 2-RBI for Wichita. The veteran extended his hit streak to eight and had his second straight multi-hit game. Matt Chavez and Martin Medina each had 2-hits as well and Christian Stringer scored 2-runs. The Cleburne offense was led by Nick Van Stratten, who was 3-4.
The rubber match of this series is set for Thursday night. Right-handers Danny Gutierrez (0-1, 2.45) and Alberto Rodriguez (5-6, 3.27) will square off. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
