Calen Addison Leads Wild Comeback Win over Stars, 5-3
Cedar Park, TX – The Iowa Wild found themselves trailing by a goal entering the third period on Friday evening, but thanks to Calen Addison, Iowa was able to erase that deficit and turn it into a victory, defeating the Stars, 5-3. Addison scored two goals in the decisive frame and Mitchell Chaffee recorded three assists to lead the Wild. The win moved the team to 3-3-1.
Iowa got on the board first, as Mitch McLain gave his team the lead 13:05 into the contest. A bad turnover put the puck right on the stick of Chaffee. He fired a wrist shot that Colton Point kicked aside, but right to McLain who put the wrist shot over the netminder’s shoulder for his second goal of the season.
With just under five minutes left in the period, Texas tied the score. The Stars had been able to keep the puck in the Iowa end, taking several shots that Derrick Baribeau was able to knock aside. Eventually the puck came to Julius Honka who was in the corner. He passed the puck across the crease to a wide open Cole Schneider at the far post. The puck was partially deflected, knocking it toward the other goal line on the opposite side of the net. Schneider gained control of the puck as Baribeau came sliding across the crease. He pulled it toward the front of the crease, then slid it between the legs of the Wild netminder for his third tally of the year.
The Stars came out in the second and took the lead 2:10 into the period. Anthony Louis passed the puck ahead to Ryan Shea, sending him the other way on a 2-on-0 break. Shea moved down the slot and at the last second passed the puck to the side to Derek Barach who redirected the puck in for his first goal of the year.
Five minutes later the Wild tied the score. The Stars had the puck in the Iowa end, but the player fell down. Chaffee quickly gained control and sent it up the boards to Connor Dewar. Dewar moved into the Texas end, waiting until he was about 15 feet from the net before firing a wrist shot over the shoulder of Point for his third goal of the year.
With 2:31 left, Texas retook the lead. Joseph Cecconi fired a shot from the point that Baribeau saved, but the rebound came to Adam Mascherin at the side of the net. He simply tucked in the loose puck to put the Stars on top 3-2.
This had been a game of periods as Iowa had outshot Texas 18-6 in the first, but the Stars had come back to dominate the second, 17-6, and that helped to put them in front. Texas ruled the third as well, at least in shots, outshooting Iowa 13-6, but it would be the Wild who would come away three unanswered goals.
The first came just 24 seconds into the frame. Mason Shaw knocked down a shot attempt in his own end, and quickly dished it ahead to Gabriel Dumont, sending him sprinting down the boards and into the Stars end. He moved in toward the Point, then fed the puck to Addison in the slot, who blasted a shot that Point got a piece of, but it crept through his pads and in for his first goal of the year. The assist was the 300th of Dumont’s career.

A little more than 10 minutes later, Addison gave his team the lead. With Iowa on the power play, Addison made a great play to keep a clearing attempt from getting out of the Texas zone. He and Chaffee continued to pass the puck back to one another looking for a great setup. Eventually, the puck came to Addison at the right faceoff circle. He took a wrist shot that found the upper corner to put the Wild on top 4-3.
With 17 seconds left in the game, Shaw put in the empty net goal, his second tally of the year. Dumont earned his second assist of the game and now has a seven-game point streak.
Baribeau earned the victory, stopping 33 of 36 shots he faced. The Wild netminder is 3-0-1 with a 2.20 GAA in his first four starts of the season.
These teams battle again on Saturday night at the H.E.B. Center. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:00.
