Pitcher of the Week – Week 15: John Brownell, Lincoln Saltdogs
Lincoln Saltdogs RHP John Brownell was named as the Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander made two starts, tossing 17 innings while allowing just seven hits and two walks combined. He also tossed a complete game, the 40th of his professional career.
Brownell’s first start of the week was on August 19, when he tossed eight one-hit innings against the Texas AirHogs. The righty retired the first 11 batters of the game, including striking out five through the first three frames.
The first base runner to reach was when Stewart Ijames walked with two down in the bottom of the fourth. Na Chaung followed with a base hit and it looked like Brownell may have been in a bit of trouble. However, he got a ground out to end the threat, starting a run of 11 straight batters retired. That streak came to an end when Erik Manoah, Jr. was hit by a pitch with one down in the eighth, but a double-play erased him.
Brownell allowed one-hit and one walk while striking out eight in his eight innings of work. Of his 100 pitches, 73 went for strikes.
His second start was on August 24, where he allowed two runs in a complete game victory over the Gary Southshore RailCats. The outing got off to a rough start when Marcus Mooney singled to lead off the game and Colin Willis drew a one-out walk, however, Brownell induced a double-play to end the threat. That started a run of nine straight batters retired.
That streak came to an end with a two out double and a run-scoring single to put Gary on the board. Brownell was not fazed however, tiring the next seven batters. He would allow one more run in the seventh on a Raymond Jones homerun, the last run that the RailCats would score.
John Brownell allowed six hits and a walk while striking out two in his nine innings of work. Of his 121 pitches, 79 were strikes.
Brownell had a .127 opponent batting average for the week, and a 0.53 WHIP. The right-hander is to second Lincoln Saltdogs pitcher to be named Pitcher of the Week, joining Reese Gregory, who was selected in Week 12.
