D.J. Snelten Silences RedHawks, Dogs Win 4-2
ROSEMONT, Ill. — D.J. Snelten dominated, Larry Balkwill scored thrice, and the Chicago Dogs defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, 4-2, on a breezy Saturday night at Impact Field.
Snelten (W, 3-0) was spectacular, allowing just one earned run on three hits, walking two and striking out six over 7.1 innings of work. It was his fourth straight start with two or fewer earned runs, and the Chicago offense managed just enough to get the victory.
Rich Mascheri and Kyle Halbohn preserved the lead over the final 1.2 innings to put the Dogs back in the win column.
The RedHawks scored first for the second game in a row, taking the lead on an RBI triple by Devan Ahart in the top of the second.
Fargo’s lead would not last long as the Dogs rallied to tie the game in the third. With two on and two outs, Trey Vavra smoked a base hit up the middle that sent Balkwill home to knot the game at one.
With a stroke of luck, the Chicago offense broke through in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Once again with two on and two outs in the frame, Vavra lined a high fly ball into right field. The ball dropped out of Tim Colwell’s glove, allowing Balkwill and Edwin Arroyo to score and give the Dogs the 3-1 advantage.
Jordan Dean added to the Dogs’ total with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh, plating Balkwill for his third run of the game to make it 4-1.
The RedHawks chipped away with one run in the eighth inning off of Rich Mascheri. With the bases loaded and one out, Mascheri forced a strikeout and a fly out to limit the damage and escape the inning.
Kyle Halbohn struck out two in a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season.
LHP Luke Westphal (4-0) will start for the Dogs in the series finale on Sunday against the RedHawks. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. at Impact Field.
