Goldeyes Bullpen Falters in Loss to Milkmen
FRANKLIN, WI – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (47-40) lost 9-8 to the Milwaukee Milkmen at Franklin Field on Wednesday night.
With the Goldeyes leading 8-7 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Brett Vertigan reached on a leadoff infield single. After Logan Trowbridge grounded into a force play, Adam Brett Walker hit a two-run, opposite-field home run to right that won the game.
Ryan Boyer (6-2) picked up the win in relief for Milwaukee (52-37), while Donnie Hart (0-1) took the loss in relief for Winnipeg.
The Goldeyes had taken the lead in the top of the ninth when Raul Navarro drove in Kyle Martin with a double to left-centre. Martin led off the inning with a double down the right field line on an 0-2 count.
The Milkmen took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Walker and a two-out, two-run single from Christian Correa.
Milwaukee made it 4-0 in the bottom of the second when Trowbridge drove in Aaron Hill with a fielder’s choice.
The Goldeyes rallied to take the lead with a five-run top of the third. Max Murphy smacked an opposite-field solo home run to right with one out. Two batters later, Kevin Lachance lined a two-out, solo home run to left-centre. Navarro extended the inning with a walk and scored the Goldeyes’ third run when Logan Hill’s single to left-centre resulted in a throwing error by Milkmen centre fielder Cole Sturgeon. Deon Stafford walked, and a wild pitch moved runners to second and third. Austin Rei then ripped a two-run single to left that put Winnipeg in front 5-4.
Sturgeon led off the bottom of the third with a home run that tied the game, and the Milkmen took a 6-5 lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Vertigan.
The score remained 6-5 Milwaukee until the top of the eighth when Tyler Hill slugged a two-out, two-run home run to left-centre.
The Milkmen answered in the bottom of the eighth when Mikey Reynolds led off with a double and scored on a single from Correa.
Dylan Burns started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in two and one-third innings. Burns walked one and struck out one.
Christian Young started for Milwaukee and also took a no-decision, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in two and two-thirds innings. Young walked three and struck out three.
