Goldeyes Offense Erupts to Down Cougars
By Doug Greenwald, Winnipeg Goldeyes
GENEVA, IL – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (13-19) matched a season-high in runs and achieved the most hits for them–16–in a game this year in a 11-6 win over the Kane County Cougars (16-17) on Saturday night at Northwestern Medicine Field. Everyone in the Winnipeg lineup had at least a hit. Right fielder Max Murphy, third baseman Dayson Croes, and catcher Hidekel Gonzalez had three hits.
The Goldeyes scored in the third inning as second baseman Brynn Martinez had a one-out single. He stole second for the first of his four thefts. Martinez with the hit extended his streak to 21 games reaching base safely. Croes followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0. In the third, Murphy (8) led off with an estimated 432-foot homer off the scoreboard in left-center which made it 2-0 Goldeyes. His eight homers are a team-high as that broke a 1-22 drought. He finished 3-5 with three RBI’s and three runs scored.
In the fifth, the visitors broke the game open scoring five times. It started on a leadoff walk by Martinez. The run-producing hits were singles by Croes and Murphy. Meanwhile designated hitter Jacob Bockelie contributed with a ground rule double and Najee Gaskins with a sacrifice fly.
Winnipeg added three runs in the sixth which included RBI’s for Murphy, Gaskins, and Gonzalez who had an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
Marc-André Habeck (1-1) earned his first win wearing a Goldeyes uniform. The Winnipeg native lasted five innings, he gave up three hits, one run (earned) while striking out four.
Kane County starter AJ Jones (0-2) worked 4 1/3 innings. He allowed nine hits, seven runs (six earned), one walk and fanned two.
The Goldeyes will try and salvage a split of this trip tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 first pitch. Left-hander RJ Martinez (3-1) will start for Winnipeg against Kane County right-hander Westin Muir (2-0).
Winnipeg returns home Tuesday, June 20 when the Lincoln Saltdogs visit Shaw Park to start a six-game homestand.
