The Biloxi Shuckers had been reeling over the last week, losing five of their last six games, but they would come up with three runs in the final third of the game on Monday night on their way to a 5-4 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits. Jake Gatewood hit his third home run of the season and drove in 3
runs to pace the Shuckers to victory.
After a scoreless first inning, it would be the Biloxi Shuckers using the long ball to get on top 2-0 in the second. Nick Franklin started the frame by hitting his first homer of the season over the right field wall. Blake Allemand followed with a base hit. Two batters later Dylan Moore singled into to center, moving Allemand to third and he scored when Clint Coulter followed with a base hit of his own to make it 2-0.
Zack Brown was in control for the Shuckers through the first four frames, allowing just one hit. However, in the fifth, they would finally get on the board. Nathan Lukes led off the inning by hitting his first home run of the year over the wall in right-center, cutting the Montgomery deficit in half.
Brown had been dominant through the first five frames, but the wheels fell off in the sixth. Michael Russell reached on an error to start the inning and back to back singles by Ryan Boldt and Nick Solak loaded the bases. The Biloxi starter came out, with Quintin Torres-Costa coming on. Dalton Kelly greeted the left-hander with a double to center that brought home Russell and Boldt and the Biscuits had their first lead of the game. Montgomery would load the bases again, but Torres-Costa struck out Michael Brousseau to end the threat.
Biloxi had been kept at bay since scoring two in the second, but they would retake the lead against Martin in the seventh. Allemand led off with a double into left and Jake Gatewood followed with a blast deep over the wall in center for his third home run of the year. That made it 4-3 Shuckers. Biloxi had the chance to extend their lead when Dylan Moore followed with a triple, but the Biscuits were able to strand the runner to keep this a one run game.
The Biscuits would respond with a run in the top of the eighth to tie the score. Nick Ramirez came on and Kelly reached on an error to start the rally. Kelly moved to second on a fly ball and reached third on a wild pitch. A base hit by Lukes brought the runner home and the score was tied at four.
The Biloxi Shuckers would do a little responding of their own, retaking the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Lucas Erceg was hit by a pitch to start the inning and was replaced by Jake Hager on the base path. Hager moved to third on back to back ground 0uts, and scored when Jake Gatewood hit a sharp single that landed just in front of the center fielder. Hager easily scored and it was 5-4 Shuckers.
In the ninth, Biloxi sent Nate Griep in looking for his sixth save of the season. He retired the Biscuits in order, striking out Boldt to end the game. Nick Ramirez (4-0) earned his fourth win of the year. Matt Krook (0-1) took the loss.
