Kansas City Monarchs Outfielder Jan Hernandez Named Player of the Week
On Monday, This Week in the Association and the Minor League Sports Report named Kansas City Monarchs outfielder Jan Hernandez as the Player of the Week for Week 2 of the 2022 American Association season. Hernandez had an impressive week, hitting .500 with seven extra-base hits and 11 RBI.
The week got off to a solid start for Hernandez, as Kansas City began the week with a three-game series against the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Hernandez went 2-5 with a run scored in the opening contest, a 7-0 victory for the Monarchs. In the second game of the series, he went 1-4, and closed out with a 0-3 performance, earning a walk in the final game of the series. In the three-game set, Hernandez went 3-12 with two runs scored and a walk.
Kansas City returned home to take on Sioux Falls over the weekend, and Hernandez was spectacular, going 9-12 in the series with seven runs scored, three homeruns, and 11 RBI. In the opening contest of the series, Hernandez was a perfect 2-2 with a walk, a hit by pitch, a run scored, and an RBI. He also doubled in the contest.
On Saturday, the outfielder went 4-6 with three runs scored and six RBI. The six RBI was the most by an American Association player this season. He also hit for the cycle, recording a single, a double, a triple, and a homerun, becoming the first player in the league to hit the mark this year. In the closing contest of the series, Hernandez went 3-4 with three runs scored, a double, two home runs, and four RBI.
During the week, Jan Hernandez went 12-24, with nine runs scored, three doubles, a triple, three homeruns, and 11 RBI. Hernandez boasted a 1.619 OPS, second highest in the league, and had a 1.083 slugging percentage, also second highest.
Hernandez is looking to build off an impressive 2021 season when the outfielder hit .318 with 19 homers and 66 RBI in 55 games. He scored 45 runs and had 33 extra-base hits last season.
