In American Association Daily, the Minor League Sports Report names their American Association Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 11 as chosen by Robert Pannier and Kevin Luckow, with former Gary Southshore RailCats right-hander Daniel Minor earning the award as the top pitcher in the league and Sioux City Explorers infielder Jay Baum honored as the Player of the Week.
Jay Baum, Daniel Minor Honored in Week 11
The Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association have named their Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 11 of the 2018 American Association season. Before heading for Mexico, Gary Southshore RailCats’ right-hander Daniel Minor was chosen as the top pitcher for Week 11 while Sioux City Explorers infielder Jay Baum was chosen as the Player of the Week.
Player of the Week: Jay Baum, Sioux City Explorers
Jay Baum had an incredible week for the Sioux City Explorers, appearing in all eight games the team played, hitting .500 with 8 runs scored and 12 RBI. The infielder also had five extra-base hits.
The week started out with a four-game series against the Cleburne Railroaders. Baum had a 2-hit performance in Game 1 of the series, but had a career night in Game 2, going 1-3 with 3-runs scored and 4-RBI. He hit his sixth homerun of the season in that contest and walked twice. A night later he had just one official at bat, but his career night would last just two days, as he would outperform himself in the final game of the series, going 5-5 with 5-RBI in a 13-1 victory over the Railroaders. In all, Baum was 8-13 in the series against Cleburne with 5-runs scored and 9-RBI.
Sioux City then swept the Lincoln Saltdogs, winning a doubleheader on July 27 before winning the final two games of the series. Baum was 4-11 in the four games, scoring 3-runs and adding 2-RBI.
For Week 11, Jay Baum was 12-24 with 3-doubles, a triple, and a homer. He also walked five times, giving him a .567 on-base percentage. His OPS was 1.400.
Baum becomes the second Sioux City Explorers player to be named Player of the Week, joining Daniel Jackson who was chosen in the first week of the season.
Pitcher of the Week: Daniel Minor, Gary Southshore RailCats
Daniel Minor was chosen by the Minor League Sports Report as the Pitcher of the Week in the American Association for Week 11. It was the second time this season that the RailCats right-hander has been given the honor, as he was the recipient back in Week 6. It was also quite a curtain call for the righty, who was signed by a team in Mexico days later.
Minor’s lone start occurred against the Sioux Falls Canaries, tossing a complete game shutout in the team’s 8-0 victory. The right-hander retired the first 10 batters he faced, seeing his run come to an end when Jabari Henry singled with one out in the fourth. He would give up a single hit in each inning from the fourth through the sixth. After giving up a ground rule double to begin the sixth, Minor retired the next nine batters he faced. His only trouble came in the ninth, when he gave up back to back singles to start the inning and gave up a two-out single to load the bases. However, he struck out Jordan Dean to end the game, completing the shutout.
Minor set a single-game high with 136 pitches thrown, 95 of which were strikes. The right-hander allowed 6-hits, he walked none, and struck out 8. The complete game shutout was his second of the season and moved him to 11-2 on the year, the most wins in the American Association.
This is the fourth time this season that a Gary Southshore RailCats player has received honors. Besides Minor being named as the Pitcher of the Week twice, Alex Gunn has also been named as the league’s top pitcher and Colin Willis has received the Player of the Week honors.
