Tyler Viza Named PURE Performance Pitcher of the Month.

This Week in the Association and the Minor League Sports Report in partnership with PURE name Kane County Cougars right-hander Tyler Viza as the PURE Performance Pitcher of the Month for July. Viza went 2-1 with a league-leading 2.74 ERA during the month.

This was a great month for the Kane County right-hander, as the team won four of his six starts, including the first two of the month. He opened with six solid innings against Sioux City on July 2, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out five. The Cougars earned the victory, winning 5-2.

In his next outing, Viza was spectacular, allowing one run in seven innings in a 2-1 victory for Kane County. The right-hander was outstanding in that contest, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out 11. That was a season-high for him at that point, but was just the first of three double-digit strikeout performances during the month of July.

On July 14, the Cougars starter had his toughest outing of the month, allowing five runs on nine hits in seven innings to the Cleburne Railroaders. The team lost 8-7 with Viza earning a no decision. He struck out seven in the contest.

Next came a spectacular outing against the RedHawks. Viza went the distance, tossing a complete game shutout. He allowed six hits in the contest and no walks, striking out 11, matching his season-high. The Kane County right-hander allowed more than one hit just one time in the contest, leading his team to a 2-0 victory.

Last week Sunday, Viza pitched extremely well, giving up one run in seven innings, but his team’s offense let him down, scoring no runs in a 2-0 loss to the Milwaukee Milkmen. The righty allowed three hits and two walks while striking out seven.

On Saturday, Viza set his season-high for strikeouts, fanning 12 in 6.2 innings in a 7-4 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries. The right-hander allowed nine hits and a walk, moving his record to 4-1. His 2.84 ERA leads the American Association.

For the month, Tyler Viza was a combined 2-1 with a 2.74 ERA in six starts. He pitched 42.2 innings, allowing 39 hits and just seven walks while striking out 53. His 53 strikeouts led the league in July.

For earning the PURE Performance Pitcher of the Month award, Tyler Viza will receive a check for $250 from PURE. Viza was named as the PURE Performance Pitcher of the Week this last Monday.
