Kyle Kinsman, Alay Lago Earn June Honors in American Association
In American Association Daily, the Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association have named their Player and Pitcher of the Month for June in the American Association. The Lincoln Saltdogs Kyle Kinman was selected as the Pitcher of the Month after posting a 1.40 ERA in six starts. The Sioux Falls Canaries Alay Lago was named for Player of the Month after hitting .465 in 25 games.
Player of the Month – June: Alay Lago, Sioux Falls Canaries
Sioux Falls Canaries infielder Alay Lago was named the American Association Player of the Month for June by This Week in the Association and the Minor League Sports Report. In 25 games, the infielder hit .465 with 20 runs scored, nine doubles, four homers, and 15 RBI.
Lago had at least one hit in 24 of the 25 games and had a season long 19 game hitting streak (May 29-Jne 21) that lasted well into the month. He posted 15 multi-hit games, including going 4 for 5 on the last day of June. That included a run of six straight games (June 11-17) where he had at least two hits in each of those contests.
It was an impressive run that saw the Canaries star raise his batting average 135 points during June. His .390 average now leads the American Association. He also raised his slugging percentage 189 points to .571. Lago is first in the league in hits (60), fifth in total bases (88), tied for third in doubles (13), and is fifth in both slugging and on-base percentage (.434).
Lago made only one error during the month.
Pitcher of the Month – June: Kyle Kinsman, Lincoln Saltdogs
The Lincoln Saltdogs Kyle Kinsman was named the American Association Pitcher of the Month for June by the Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association. Kinsman made six starts, going 1-1 with a 1.40 ERA. In 38.2 innings, the lefty allowed 23 hits and 16 walks, while striking out 36.
Kinsman began the month by allowing no runs in five innings against the Milwaukee Milkmen, but earned a no decision in the team’s 3-1 loss. He returned to the hill four days later, allowing no earned runs in a 4-1 win over the Texas AirHogs. The lefty allowed three hits and two walks while striking out seven.
On June 10, going on four days rest once again, the Saltdogs starter gave up one run in 7.1 innings to the Sioux City Explorers, but would take a no decision once again as the team lost late, 2-1. Kinsman allowed four hits and three walks in that game, striking out five.
In his next start, he blanked the Sioux Falls Canaries for five innings, as his team held a 5-1 lead heading into the ninth, but lost 7-5. That was followed up by eight innings against the Milkmen where he allowed five hits and a single run in a game won in extra innings by Lincoln, 2-1.
Through his first five starts of the month, Kinsman allowed two earned runs in 33 innings pitched. He gave up 18 hits while striking out 28, including nine against Milwaukee on June 20.
His only tough start was his last one, falling to the Cleburne Railroaders 8-2. The lefty allowed five hits and four runs in 5.2 innings.
Kyle Kinsman has a 2.81 ERA this season, sixth best in the American Association.
