McRae Dazzles But DockHounds Fall in 10
by Sam Matheny, Lake Country DockHounds
GARY, IND. – The Gary SouthShore RailCats avoided the sweep against the Lake Country DockHounds, winning the finale of the
series 2-1.
The game was a low-scoring affair, with a lot of excellent pitching and defense.
The DockHounds starting pitcher Alex McRae pitched a very strong game, but the Lake Country bats struggled to rally behind
him. In seven innings, McRae gave up just one run and struck out 10, the most strikeouts of any player in a single game for the
‘Hounds this season.
In the third inning, Jackson Smith advanced on a single for the RailCats and scored on an M.J. Rookard double. The scoring
would halt until the very end of the game.
The scoring drought ended for the visiting DockHounds in the ninth inning. Tristen Carranza doubled to left field, getting into
scoring position for just the second time on the night. After advancing to third on a groundout, Carranza scored off a wild pitch by
Gary SouthShore reliever Carlos Vega to tie the game 1-1.
The game would go to extra innings. The DockHounds tried to score on a sacrifice fly in the 10th, but were caught in a double play
by a throw to the plate from the center fielder Zach Welz.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Lake Country found themselves with a runner on second and third base with just one out. After
intentionally walking Michael Cruz to set up a double play opportunity, Zach Racusin had the walk-off single to win the game for
the RailCats.
The closing pitcher Vega earned the victory while Lake Country’’s Mei Mei lost in relief.
The DockHounds will host the Kansas City Monarchs at Wisconsin Brewing Company Park beginning Friday, June 3rd, with first
pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
