Reyes Masterful in Goldeyes Victory over RailCats
GARY, IN – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (17-22) beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 3-2 at US Steel Yard on Friday night.
Tied at 2-2 in the top of the eighth, and with two outs and no one on base, Max Murphy beat out an infield single on a sharp groundball to shortstop. Kyle Martin then ripped a single to right-centre that was misplayed by centre fielder Jesus Marriaga. Murphy was waved to the plate and scored just ahead of second baseman Ryan Cash’s relay throw.
Goldeyes’ starter Eduard Reyes retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the lead.
Jose Jose pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save of the year.
Reyes (4-4) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on two hits over eight innings. Reyes walked four, struck out eight, and threw 128 pitches. The eight innings were the most by a Goldeyes’ starting pitcher this season.
RailCats’ starter Trevor Lubking (2-4) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits over seven and two-thirds innings. Lubking walked one and struck out nine.
Gary SouthShore (18-23) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Raymond Jones’ sacrifice fly chased home Daniel Lingua.
Winnipeg responded in the top of the fifth. Raul Navarro bunted for a single along the first base line leading off and took second on a wild pitch. Logan Hill’s single through the left side put runners on the corners with no outs, and the Goldeyes tied the game when Kevin Lachance laid down a safety squeeze bunt that scored Navarro.
In the top of the sixth, Murphy singled up the middle with one out and took third two batters later when Navarro singled up the middle. Murphy then scored the go-ahead run on a two-out wild pitch by Lubking.
The RailCats tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Lingua scored on a two-out, infield single from Marriaga.
