Explorers 3B Matt Lloyd Named Player of the Week

On Monday, This Week in the Association and the Minor League Sports Report named Sioux City Explorers third baseman Matt Lloyd as the Player of the Week for Week 10 of the 2023 American Association season. This is the second time this season that Lloyd has received the award, winning back in Week 3.

The week did not start off on the right foot for Matt Lloyd, as he went 1-6 through the first two games against the Lake Country DockHounds. He did drive in a run in each of the first two contests and walked three times total, but rebounded in the final contest, going 4-5 with two runs scored.

The Explorers then traveled to take on the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks where Lloyd was a combined 7-14 with four runs scored, three home runs, and four RBI. He homered in two of the contests, both victories for Sioux City. In the opener, Lloyd went 3-5 with two runs scored, a home run, and an RBI. After going 0-4 in the loss to the RedHawks on Saturday, Lloyd responded with a 4-5 performance, homering twice and driving in three. He homered in each of the first two innings to help stake Sioux City to a 5-0 lead.

For the week, Matt Lloyd finished first in batting average (.480) and added three home runs, six RBI, and six runs scored. He was second with a .533 on-base percentage and finished third with a .840 slugging percentage.

Matt Lloyd was selected in the 15th round of the 2019 draft by the Cincinnati Reds. He spent three seasons in the Reds organization, reaching AA-Chattanooga in 2022. In 106 career minor league games, Lloyd hit .228 with 18 home runs and 52 RBI. This is his first season in the American Association. Lloyd is second in the league in batting (.353) and has 10 homeruns and 36 RBI in 47 games. He is first in on-base percentage (.464).
