Sioux Falls Canaries Left-Hander Ty Culbreth Named Pitcher of the Week
On Monday, This Week in the Association and the Minor League Sports Report named Sioux Falls Canaries left-hander Ty Culbreth as the American Association Pitcher of the Week for Week 6. Culbreth was fantastic in his one start of the week, tossing eight shutout innings in a 1-0 victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs.
The Thursday matchup was a spectacular pitcher’s duel as Ty Culbreth was pitted against Lincoln left-hander Greg Minier. This was a scoreless tie through the first two innings, but Sioux Falls took the lead in the bottom of the third when Jabari Henry connected for his 14th homerun of the season. That gave the Canaries a 1-0 lead and Culbreth made it stand, allowing three hits and no walks in eight innings, striking out five.
The left-hander retired the first nine Saltdogs of the game, seeing his streak come to an end when Randy Norris led off the top of the fourth with a single. However, after allowing the hit, Culbreth retired the next 12 batters before Hunter Clanin led off the eighth with a single. This was the only frame the lefty found himself in trouble, as he gave up a two out hit to Garett Delano, but was able to get out of the jam by striking out Skyler Weber.
Culbreth faced just three batters over the minimum. He threw just 78 pitches in the contest, 57 for strikes. The victory moved the lefty to 4-3 with a 4.71 ERA.
Ty Culbreth is in his seventh season of professional baseball. He began in 2016 in the Colorado Rockies organization, reaching AA-Hartford in 2019. The next season he joined the Canaries as a full-time starter, and has now appeared in 35 games, posting a 14-14 record.
