Stout Brilliant, Martin Homers Twice – American Association Daily Recap

In today’s edition of American Association Daily Recap, the 2020 American Association got underway with all six teams taking to the diamond. Highlights included the Chicago Dogs defeating the Milwaukee Milkmen behind five one-hit innings from Eric Stout and both Sioux Falls and Winnipeg scored nine runs in their victories.
Stout, Dogs Stymies Milkmen, 2-1
Eric Stout blanked the Milwaukee Milkmen on one-hit over five-hits and Tony Rosselli hit the first homerun of the season as the Chicago Dogs prevailed, 2-1. Stout combined with three relievers to help sour the Milkmen bats for eight innings. Milwaukee rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth on a Logan Trowbridge double, but could not get the equalizer.

Bats Power Canaries Past Saints, 9-4
The Sioux Falls Canaries opened the season with a 9-4 victory over the defending American Association champion St. Paul Saints, thanks to four homeruns. The Canaries jumped out to a 3-0 lead before St. Paul battled back to tie the score. Sioux Falls retook the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, adding two runs in the fifth, seventh, and eighth innings. Andrew Ely, Jabari Henry, Alay Lago, and KC Huth went deep for Sioux Falls.

Martin, Goldeyes Down RedHawks, 9-5
Kyle Martin homered twice and drove in four as the Winnipeg Goldeyes opened the season with a 9-5 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Jordan George also had a big day for Winnipeg, hitting his first homerun and driving in three. Mitch Lambson picked up where he left off from last season, allowing one-run and striking out seven in six innings of work. Blake Grant-Parks homered for the RedHawks.

Player of the Day: Kyle Martin, Winnipeg GoldeyesKyle Martin homered twice and drove in four runs to help lead the Goldeyes to victory in the season opener. With the score tied in the top of the fourth, Martin crushed a blast down the right field line for a two-run homer to give Winnipeg the lead for good. In the eighth, the Goldeyes first basemen added his second two-run homer of the night. Martin scored two runs and added a walk.
Pitcher of the Day: Eric Stout, Chicago Dogs
Eric Stout allowed just one-hit in five-innings of work to lead the Chicago Dogs to a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Milkmen. The only hit allowed by Stout was a one-out single to Mason Davis in the second. The left-hander walked Zach Nehrir in the third, then retired eight of the next nine batters he faced, with an error being the only blemish during the run. Stout threw 79 pitches, 53 for strikes.
Daily Notes
Despite the “fear” some had regarding the pandemic, all three home teams reported large crowds. Milwaukee, Fargo-Moorhead, and Sioux Falls set capacity limits based upon state guidelines, but each game was played before an enthusiastic audience. The RedHawks had the largest attendance of the night at nearly 2,000.
