Tim Colwell, Keaton Steele Honored in Week 12
The Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association have named their Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 12 of the 2018 American Association season. Gary Southshore RailCats newcomer Keaton Steele was named as the Pitcher of the Week, while the red-hot Tim Colwell was chosen as the Player of the Week.
Player of the Week: Tim Colwell, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks
The Minor League Sports Report has named Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks outfielder Tim Colwell as the Player of the Week for Week 12 in the American Association. Colwell continues his red-hot performance, hitting .429 in seven games with 7-runs scored and 8-RBI. He also had four extra base hits, including two triples. This is the second time this season that Colwell has been honored as the Player of the Week, earning honors in Week 8.
The outfielder began the week with four games against the St. Paul Saints, a series where the RedHawks won three of four. Colwell had 2-hits in each game of the series, finishing 8-14, with 5-runs and 5-RBI. The series was critical as Fargo-Moorhead entered the series just a half game ahead of the Saints in the standings and were 2.5 games ahead when the series ended.
Next up was a three-game series against the Cleburne Railroaders, where he went 4-14. Colwell scored 2-runs and drove in three, while adding a home run. He had hits in each of the three games, extending his hitting streak to 16 games.
In all, Tim Colwell was 12-28. He also walked four times, posting a .485 on-base percentage and had an OPS of 1.199. He struck out just two times in 28 at-bats, giving him only 23 Ks in 210 Abs.
Pitcher of the Week: Keaton Steele, Gary Southshore RailCats
The Minor League Sports Report has named Gary Southshore RailCats right-hander Keaton Steele as its Pitcher of the Week for Week 12. Steele was 2-0 in his two starts, posting a 0.00 ERA in 11.2 innings pitched. Steele moved into the rotation after the RailCats’ top starter, Daniel Minor, headed for Mexico. That left a huge gap at the top of the rotation, and the right-hander has quickly filled that void, establishing himself as the ace of the staff.
His first start of the week came in a July 31 outing against the Chicago Dogs. Keaton Steele allowed 4-hits in 6.0-innings, walking one and striking out 2 as he blanked the Dogs in the 4-0 victory. The right-hander threw 81-pitches in his longest outing of the season, 52 of which were strikes.
On August 5, Keaton Steele held the potent Wichita Wingnuts to just 4-hits in 5.2-innings, not allowing a run in a 4-1 victory that helped to extend the RailCats lead in the North Division to 1.5 games. Steele was only threatened in the fifth, when he gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases, but got out of the inning by inducing a ground out.
The right-hander is the fourth Gary Southshore RailCats player to receive honors this season. Daniel Minor has twice been named Pitcher of the Week (Weeks 6 and 11) and Alex Gunn was the Pitcher of the Week in Week 3. Colin Willis was named Player of the Week in Week 4.
