Tyler Kane Grounds AirHogs Bats as Wingnuts Win 6-1
The Wichita Wingnuts headed to the road for the first time this season, making a trip to Texas to face the AirHogs. The three-game series began with Tyler Kane looking to continue to build off his impressive 2016 debut when the righty went 2-1 with a 1.68 ERA in three-starts, and that is exactly what he delivered on Monday night, allowing just 1-run while striking out 7 in 6-innings of work, as the Wingnuts were the winners, 6-1.
After a scoreless first inning, Wichita took the lead in the top of the second against Griffin Russell. Matt Chavez led off the inning with a double. Two batters later he scored when Martin Medina lined a single to center.
Texas responded right away in their half of the frame. Dennis Phipps singled to start the inning and scored when Levi Scott followed with a double into the gap. That tied the score at one.
In the top of the third, the Wichita Wingnuts did a little responding of their own. Harrison Kain singled to start the inning and moved to second on a ground out. He then stole third before Brent Clevlen walked to put runners at the corners with one out. Next up was T.J. Mittelstaedt, who singled sharply to score Kain and move Clevlen to third. After Mittelstaedt stole second, Chavez ripped a single into left to score both runners and Wichita was on top, 4-1.
That was plenty enough support for Tyler Kane (1-0) who allowed just three-hits following the lone AirHogs run in the second. Kane finished with 6-IP, allowing 5-hits and a run, while striking out 7. The righty was in command of his pitches all night long, throwing 61 or 89 pitches for strikes.
Jared Wilson, Mike Devine and Austin Boyle each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. None allowed a hit or a walk and Devine struck out the side in his inning of work.
The Winguts would extend their lead with runs in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, Chavez walked to start the frame and Josh Blanco came on in relief. Two batters later Medina replaced Chavez on the base paths when he hit into a fielder’s choice. Richard Prigatano singled to keep the inning alive and Medina scored when Leo Vargas delivered a two-out hit of his own.
In the ninth, Clevlen singled with one out. He moved to second on a ground out and scored when Chavez delivered his third hit of the game. That made the score 6-1.
Matt Chavez finished 3-4 with a run and 2-RBI, raising his average to .357. Brent Clevlen was 2-3 with 2-runs and 2-walks. The AirHogs offense was led by Levi Scott, who was 2-3 with an RBI.
The second game of this series is a late morning affair. Alex Boshers (1-0, 3.00) goes for the Wichita Wingnuts (4-1). LHP Jeff Russell (0-0, 4.50) gets the start for the Texas AirHogs (1-4). Game time is 11:05.
