Shoemaker, Medina Honored in Week 3
The Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association have chosen their Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 3 in the American Association. Eddie Medina repeats as Pitcher of the Week after tossing a No-Hitter while the Chicago Dogs Victor Roache is named the Player of the Week after an outstanding performance.
Player of the Week – Week 3: Victor Roache
Chicago Dogs outfielder Victor Roache was named as the American Association Player of the Week by This Week in the Association and the Minor League Sports Report, the second Chicago player to win in as many weeks. Roache was tied for the fourth best batting average during the week (.455), scored 3 runs and drove in 5 more. That included recording RBIs in each of the last five games.
Roache got off to a fast start when he went 7-10 against the Sioux Falls Canaries. He was 3-3 in the opening contest with 2 doubles. He then went 2-4 in the second game of the series and 2-3 in the third, homering in each of those contests. The Dogs won the last two games of the series.
He then went 3-12 against the Sioux City Explorers, going 1-4 in each of those contests with an RBI. Chicago won two of those three games as well.
Roache posted an .818 slugging percentage and a 1.272 OPS, both second best during the week.
Pitcher of the Week – Week 1: Eddie Medina, St. Paul Saints
For the third straight week, a St. Paul Saints starter was named the American Association Pitcher of the Week, as Eddie Medina was chosen for the second week in a row. Medina became the second pitcher in the Saints nearly 28 year history to throw a no-hitter, and the first to do so since 1996.
The performance was one for the ages for the St. John’s graduate. Medina walked one batter while striking out 10, leading the Saints to a 5-0 victory over the Cleburne Railroaders. Medina retired the first six batters he faced. A dropped third strike allowed John Nester to reach started the third inning, and he would move to second on a hit by pitch. K.C. Huth then moved both runners into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, but Medina struck out Nick Rotola before getting a ground out to end the threat.
The final two outs of the third started a string of 16 straight batters retired. That finally came to an end when Logan Trowbridge walked with two outs in the eighth. Trowbridge was stranded as a ground out ended the inning. In the ninth, Medina retired the final three batters in order to complete the No-Hit bid.
Of his 107 pitches, 66 were strikes. That was the first complete game no-hitter in the American Association since Matt Sergey tossed a seven-inning no-hitter for the Kansas City T-Bones against the Texas AirHogs in 2017. The last nine inning no-hitter was thrown by the Gary Southshore RailCats Karl Triana in 2016.
