Walk-Off Error Gives Goldeyes Victory in 10
The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Max Murphy led off with a home run to left-centre field off Chicago starter Jordan Kipper.
The Dogs responded in their next at bat when Anfernee Grier scored on a Ryan Haug double play, making the score 1-1.
Kevin Lachance put Winnipeg ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a long single off the wall in left field that scored Raul Navarro.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lachance doubled down the left field line scoring Logan Hill which gave the Goldeyes a 3-1 lead.
Chicago rallied to take the lead in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three times. First K.C. Hobson scored on a fielding error to cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 3-2, then Harrison Smith plated Grant Kay with a single to tie the game at three apiece. One batter later Haug gave the visitors their first lead of the evening, scoring Harrison with an RBI single to make it 4-3 Chicago.
Winnipeg evened the contest at 4-4 in their half of the inning when Jay Gonzalez scored on a Logan Hill ground out.
The Goldeyes won the game with one out in the tenth inning when Lachance scored from second base on a fielding error by shortstop Smith. Lachance finished the game four of five at the plate with two RBIs.
Daniel Kubiuk (1-0), making his professional debut and pitching for the first time in five years, earned the win in relief for Winnipeg. Juan Echevarria (0-1) took the loss for Chicago.
The series continues Saturday at 6:35 p.m. The Goldeyes have yet to name a starting pitcher while right-hander Garrett Christman (0-0, 0.00) will make his first start of the season for the Dogs. All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca.
The Goldeyes will continue to monitor the reopening of the Canada/US border and assess a potential return to Shaw Park in 2021.
