American Association Daily Recap: August 24, 2019
In this edition of American Association Daily, Robert Pannier examines the highlights, transactions and news from the American Association for August 24, 2019. There were six games in the American Association on Saturday, including the St. Paul Saints winning a marathon contest over the Chicago Dogs, and the Kansas City T-Bones downed the Sioux City Explorers to take possession of second place in the South.
Daily Recaps: August 24, 2019
T-Bones Ride Early Lead to Victory, 9-5
The Kansas City T-Bones scored six runs in the top of the second, then held on for a 9-5 victory over the Sioux City Explorers. T.J. House earned the victory in his first start for Kansas City. Dylan Tice had four hits and three runs driven in for the T-Bones. Jose Sermo hit a grand slam for Sioux City. The victory moved Kansas City into sole possession of second place in the South Division.
Garcia Walk-Off Homer Stuns Goldeyes, 11-9
The Winnipeg Goldeyes battled back from a 5-1 deficit to take the lead in the top of the ninth, only to see the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks tie the score in the bottom half of the inning. That sent the game to extra innings, where Winnipeg would take a three run lead in the top of the 11th. However, once again, Fargo would battle back in the bottom half the frame, as Carlos Garcia blasted a walk-off three run homer to give the RedHawks the 11-9 victory. Devan Ahart had six hits for the RedHawks.
Baker Walk-Off Single Ends Marathon Affair, 2-1
Chris Baker drove home Blake Schmit with two down in the bottom of the 15th inning to give the St. Paul Saints a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Dogs. Ryan Zimmerman blanked Chicago through seven innings, and Chris Lee earned the victory with five perfect frames for St. Paul. Justin Goossen-Brown took the loss despite tossing 5.2 outstanding innings. The victory moved St. Paul three games ahead of Chicago for the final playoff berth in the North Division.
Railroaders Bury AirHogs, 22-2
Michael Gunn allowed one unearned run in six innings and Angel Rosa homered twice to lead the Cleburne Railroads over the Texas AirHogs, 22-2. Cleburne would blow open a close contest in the top of the sixth, scoring five in the frame, then adding four in the seven and 10 in the eighth. Daniel Robertson finished with five RBI and scored four runs, and Rosa had four hits and five runs scored to go along with three RBI.
Brownell Stymies RailCats, 5-2
John Brownell went the distance to lead the Lincoln Saltdogs to a 5-2 victory over the Gary Southshore RailCats. Brownell allowed two earned runs on six hits for the 40th complete game of his professional career. Christian Ibarra had two hits and an RBI for Lincoln.
Ventura, Milkmen Blank Canaries, 1-0
Angel Ventura tossed seven scoreless inning as the Milwaukee Milkmen defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries, 1-0. Sam Dexter had two hits and scored the only run of the game, coming home on a Derek Reddy base hit in the fifth inning. Mark Seyler took the loss despite allowing just one run in six innings.
American Association Notes
The Lincoln Saltdogs John Brownell tossed the 40th complete game of his career. It was the 300th start of his career…The St. Paul Saints and Chicago Dogs contest on Saturday went 15 innings, tied for the longest in the league this season…Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks second baseman set a league season-high with six hits and Saturday night’s game.
