American Association Homers Coming in Pairs
American Association Daily provides insights, features, and recaps of the action from around the American Association of Professional Baseball League, as well as player and coaching profiles and transactions. In today’s edition, Robert Pannier looks at the ridiculous number of two homer games so far in the American Association this season.
American Association Enjoying a Power Surge
The American Association is seeing a power surge like never before in 2022. Already 298 home runs have been hit, and average of 2.18 homeruns per game. No team has been flexing their muscles more than the Kansas City Monarchs, who have already hit 47 homers in 23 games, an average of 2.04 homeruns per contest.
Just to add a little perspective, Kansas City set an American Association record last season with 147 home runs in 100 games. Just 23 games into this season, and they need just 101 home runs in the final 77 games to eclipse that mark.
It has not just been the number of homeruns hit this season, but the individual performances as well. Already Sioux Falls Canaries Jabari Henry and Kansas City Monarchs Matt Adams and Jan Hernandez have 10 homeruns with all three players on pace to eclipse the homerun mark set by Milwaukee Milkmen outfielder Adam Brett Walker II last season when he hit 33. At their current pace, all three players are set to eclipse that mark by 10.
No doubt the 2022 is already being viewed as the Year of the Homerun in the American Association, but one mark that is sure to be eclipsed is the number of two homerun contests that players have had. There is not an official record of this statistic, but there have been over two dozen two-homer games and the league has not even played one full month of games. This is truly going to be a spectacular season for the long ball, so here are the two-homer games by the numbers.
26 – There have been 26 two homerun performances so far this season.
18-6 – The team that has had a two-homer performance has won 18 of the 24 games this season. (Two games have seen the same team have two two-homer performances in that contest.)
18 – From May 13-May 31, there were 18 two-homer performances in the American Association, an average of nearly 1 per day. There have been eight two-homer games through the first eight days of June.
10 – There have been 10 teams in the American Association who have had at least one two-homer performance this season. The only two who have not are the Cleburne Railroaders and the Chicago Dogs. There have also been 10 teams who have given up at least one two-homer performance this season, with only the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and the Sioux City Explorers excluded from that list.
8 – No team has had more two-homer performances this season then the Kansas City Monarchs, who have had eight. That includes two games where they had two players who achieved the mark in the same contest. More on that later. The Milwaukee Milkmen, Lake Country DockHounds, Winnipeg Goldeyes, and Sioux Falls Canaries have all had three two-homer performances this season. The Kane County Cougars have two two-homer games.
5 – Two teams have given up five two-homer performances this year, including the Lake Country DockHounds and the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The Sioux Falls Canaries and Lincoln Saltdogs have given up four two-homer games. The Kansas City Monarchs and the Cleburne Railroaders have each given up two.
In addition, five players have had two two-homer games this year, including Max Murphy (Winnipeg Goldeyes), Matt Adams and David Thompson (Kansas City Monarchs), Gio Brusa (Lake Country DockHounds), and Keon Barnum (Milwaukee Milkmen). Murphy is the only player to have had back-to-back two-homer performances, doing so on June 2 against Cleburne and June 3 against Lincoln.
4– There have been four games this season where there were at least two two-homer performances in the same game. On May 23, Hidekel Gonzalez hit two for the Winnipeg Goldeyes while Jabari Henry had three for the Sioux Falls Canaries. Sioux Falls won that contest.
On May 25, Cornelius Randolph homered twice for the Kane County Cougars against the Lake Country DockHounds, while Gio Brusa homered twice for Lake Country. The DockHounds earned the victory.
On May 30, there were three two-homer games, as Hunter Clanin went deep for the Lincoln Saltdogs while Willie Abreu and Jan Hernandez each went deep twice for the Kansas City Monarchs. Kansas City won that game.
On June 3, the Monarchs had two players recorded at least two homeruns in the game, as Matt Adams went deep twice and Hernandez hit three homeruns against the Lake Country DockHounds.
3 – Two players have three two-homer games this season, including Jabari Henry (Sioux Falls Canaries) and Jan Hernandez (Kansas City Monarchs). Hernandez is the only player this season who had a three-homer game (June 3, 2022).
The most two-homer performances happened on May 30 and June 3 when there were three total for each day. The May 30 date saw all three hit in the contest between the Kansas City Monarchs in the Lincoln Saltdogs. On June 3, the Monarchs hit two against the DockHounds while Max Murphy hit two for the Winnipeg Goldeyes against the Lincoln Saltdogs.
1 – There have been six players who have had one two-homer performance this season. That includes Peter Maris (Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks), Lamar Briggs (Lake Country DockHounds), Nick Franklin (Sioux City Explorers), Jimmy Kerrigan (Kane County Cougars), Zach Racusin (Gary SouthShore RailCats), and Chad Sedio (Milwaukee Milkmen)
0 – There has not been a team in the American Association this season who has not been involved in a two-homer performance.
