Canaries Avoid Sweep, RailCats Rally, Monarchs Down Dogs

In today’s edition, Rob Pannier recaps six great games in the American Association on Sunday, including the Sioux Falls Canaries using a big third inning to avoid the sweep, the Gary SouthShore RailCats rallied to down the Lake Country DockHounds, and Juan Echevarria dominated in Milwaukee Milkmen victory.

Monarchs Rally to Down Dogs
The Kansas City Monarchs found themselves trailing by two coming out of the seventh and looked like they would be swept by the Chicago Dogs, but Kansas City rallied for four runs over the final two frames to earn a 5-4 victory. That made a winner of Trey Jeans, who allowed one run in three innings. Jonathan Cheshire took the loss.
Each team scored a run in the third, but the Dogs jumped on top in the sixth, scoring two runs thanks to a costly error. Chicago held the two-run advantage until the eighth when Keon Broxton tied the score with a two-run shot and Gavin Collins delivered an RBI double. The Monarchs added a run in the top of the ninth when Dylan Rosa homered to begin the frame, and that proved to be critical as Cody Bohanek homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth to make this a one-run game again. However, Jeans was able to retire the next three batters to finish off the victory.
Nick Heath had three hits for Chicago and Josh Altmann had two. Collins had two hits for Kansas City.

Six-Run Third Helps Canaries Avoid Sweep
The Sioux Falls Canaries scored six runs in the third, erasing a four-run deficit as they defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, 10-8. The top of the order led the way for Sioux Falls, going a combined 7-14 with six runs scored and three RBI. Dillon Thomas had three hits for the RedHawks.
Fargo-Moorhead got off to a great start, scoring five runs in the first inning on just three hits. John Silviano delivered a bases clearing double and Sam Dexter drove home Silviano with his third home run of the year. The Canaries got two of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but the RedHawks extended the lead to four in the top of the third. In the bottom of the frame, Sioux Falls exploded for six runs on three hits, sending 10 men to the plate. Tyler Ryan had a three-run double that put his team on top and he scored on a single by Carson Clowers. The Canaries added single runs in the fourth and fifth and Fargo-Moorhead scored two in the sixth t0 close out the scoring.
Wyatt Ulrich went 3-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. He hit his first homer of the year. Darnell Sweeney had two hits and scored twice. Thomas scored twice.

Mid-Inning Surge Propels RailCats
The Gary SouthShore RailCats scored six runs from the sixth through the eighth innings to earn a 7-2 victory over the Lake Country DockHounds. The score was tied at one after five as both John Sheaks and Marcus Shawaryn were pitching very well. However, the RailCats began to take control in the sixth. An error made it 2-1 and Gary SouthShore added three more in the seventh capped off by a two-run single by Jackson Valera. The RailCats plated two more in the eighth on a two-run single by Francisco Del Valle.
Sheaks earned the victory, allowing just one run in seven innings. The first four batters in the Gary order went a combined 8-15 with all four recording two hits. They also scored a combined four runs and added six RBI.
Omar Meregildo and Aaron Simmons each had two hits and an RBI for the DockHounds. Shawaryn took the loss.

Echevarria Shines in Milkmen Victory
Juan Echevarria tossed five shutout innings as the Milwaukee Milkmen defeated the Cleburne Railroaders, 7-3. It was the first start of the season for Echevarria, who had made six relief appearances. The right-hander allowed three hits and two walks.
This contest was in question for much of the game, as the Milkmen a 3-2 lead into the top of the seventh, but scored four runs over the final three innings to seal the victory. Miguel Gomez hit a solo homer in the sixth and Bryan Torres and Justin Williams added RBI doubles in the seventh. In the eighth, Roy Morales hit a solo homer.
Gomez and Morales were each 2-4 with a run and two RBI. Mark Karaviotis went 4-4 with two RBI for Cleburne and Zach Nehrir was 3-5 with a run and an RBI.
Cougars Rally to Down Goldeyes
The Kane County Cougars trailed by three, but rallied for five unanswered runs to earn a 6-4 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Daniel Bies earned the victory in relief, tossing two scoreless frames, and Logan Nissen recorded his second save of the season. The Cougars bullpen combined to toss four scoreless innings.
The Goldeyes took the lead in the top of the first as Jacob Bockelie hit a three-run homer, his fifth of the year. Kane County was down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but received solo homers from Jimmy Kerrigan and J.D. Osborne to cut the deficit to one. They tied the score in the fifth on an RBI single by Osborne and took the lead in the seventh on a two-run blast by Jonah Davis.
Osborne and Armond Upshaw each had three hits and Osborne drove in three. Kerrigan was 2-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Winnipeg had just seven hits with Chris Burgess recording two of them.

Saltdogs Win Rubber Match
The Lincoln Saltdogs defeated the Sioux City Explorers in the rubber match of their series, 6-4. The Saltdogs trailed by one coming out of the first, but scored six of the next seven runs, including single runs in the third and seventh and a pair in both the fourth and eighth.
Nate Samson led the way, scoring three runs to go along with three hits and an RBI. Marshall Awtry had two hits and scored twice and Aaron Takacs had two hits and two RBI. Samson and Awtry both homered for Lincoln. John Bezdicek earned the victory and Matt Cronin recorded the final out for his third save.
Jake Ortega had two hits and scored twice for Sioux City. Daniel Perez also had two hits and an RBI.
