Canaries Fall Short in Series Opener with Cleburne
SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-8) fall to the Cleburne Railroaders in the opener of a three-game series 6-3 Tuesday. The Birds will host Cleburne the next two nights at 7:05 PM at The Birdcage with a chance to still win the series.
Tyler Garkow (1-2) was credited with the loss for the Birds. Garkow allowed 12 hits and six runs (six earned). Maverik Buffo (2-1) was credited with the win for the Railroaders. Buffo gave up nine hits and three runs while striking out five Canaries.
The Canaries and Railroaders each racked up 13 hits. Mitch Glasser led the way with three hits. Zane Gurwitz, Logan Landon, Trey Michalczewski and Charlie Valerio all recorded two hits.
The game was the first in a Canaries jersey for Valerio since May 21. He briefly left the team to play for Team Dominican Republic at the Olympic qualifying trials in Florida.
Michalczewski was able to go deep in the fifth inning for a solo home run. The blast was his third in the last six games and his sixth of the season.
The second game of the series will feature RHP Garrett Alexander (1-2, 6.19 ERA) starting for the Railroaders and RHP Angel Ventura (2-1, 5.25 ERA) starting for the Canaries.
