Myrtle Beach 3-5, Carolina 2-1

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Carolina Mudcats began the day by completing last night’s pitcher’s duel that was suspended by rain, and then got down to their regularly scheduled contest. Unfortunately for the Mudcats, they were not able to take either of games and now find themselves 5.5 games out of first in the Southern Division. This was a chance to at the very least remain 3.5 games out, and at the best be just 1.5 out. Instead the worst case scenario happened and they are now two games further back than when they started the day.

In the continuation of the suspended game, the Pelicans scored in the top of the 14th inning to have their first lead of the game, and grabbed the 3-2 win. Abel De Los Santos (5-0) pitched four great innings of relief for the win, and this kept his record unblemished. To start out the 14th Josh Martin walked Preston Beck. Beck then stole his seventh base of the season to get into scoring position. After Royce Bollinger struck out, Nick Williams singled to right field scoring Beck and De Los Santos would retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.

In the regularly scheduled game, Myrtle Beach would stake Carolina to a 1-0 lead in the third before taking the lead in the sixth. The game would remain close, 2-1, until the eighth, when the Pelicans plated three to break it open for the 5-1 win. Christopher Bostick had a big game at the plate for the Pelicans, going 3-4 with two doubles, a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. His three-run homer in the eighth sealed the game for Myrtle Beach. Chad James (4-1) got the win for the Pelicans and Cole Sulser (4-11) was the hard luck loser for Carolina.

Frederick 5, Wilmington 2

The Frederick Keys finally got into the win column with a big 5-2 win over the Wimington Blue Rocks. Mark Blackmar pitched seven outstanding innings, giving up just two hits and one run for the win to improve his record to 7-1 and drop his ERA to 3.21. Lex Rutledge closed out the ninth for his third save of the season. Trey Mancini had the big bat for the Keys, posting a 3-4 day with three runs and an RBI. Of his three hits he had a double and his fifth home run of the year. Raul Mondesi hit his fifth home run for Wilmington.

Lynchburg 2, Winston-Salem 1

The Lynchburg Hillcats are happy to see Potomac rained out as long as they keep winning. That is what they did Sunday afternoon to pull within 2.5 games of the drenched Nationals in the Northern Division. The game was tied until the ninth inning when the Hillcats would grab the dramatic victory. With two outs Tyler Tewell doubled into left field off of reliever Ben Brewster. Emerson Landoni was then hit by a pitch. Joseph Odom stepped to the plate with the chance to be the hero and that is exactly what he became, singling up the middle to score Tewell with the walk-off win. Brady Feigl got the win to move to 2-1.

Potomac vs Salem

For the third night in a row the Potomac Nationals and Salem Red Sox were rained out. The games will be made up this week.
