Chisholm Records Three Points in Moose Victory over Wild
DES MOINES, IA – Declan Chisholm provided three helpers for the Manitoba Moose as the team held on for a 4-3 victory over the Iowa Wild on Friday. Three different players scored goals for the Wild, including Ty Ronning. Jesper Wallstedt stopped 22 shots in suffering the loss.
The game was scoreless through the first 21 minutes, but Andrej Sustr gave Iowa the lead 1:08 into the second period. Nic Petan made a beautiful cross ice pass through the slot to Sustr who gained control the puck, then fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Arvid Holm for his first goal of the season.
Just after the six-minute mark, Manitoba tied the score. While the Moose were on the power-play, Chisholm passed the puck to Leon Gawanke at the right face-off circle, who buried a one-timer past Wallstedt for his seventh goal of the year.
The score was tied for just 22 seconds before Ronning put Iowa back on top. Ronning took a shot from the right face-off circle that Holm saved, but he picked up his own rebound, putting it past the Moose netminder to make it 2-1.
At 10:44, Henri Nikkanen tied the score once again. Nikkanen used a burst of speed to get behind the Wild defenseman, moving in on Wallstedt before beating him with a wrist shot for his fourth goal of the year. That sent the contest to the second intermission tied at two.
The score remained tied through the first 14 minutes of the third frame, but Jeff Malott gave Manitoba their first lead of the game, scoring on the power-play at 14:08. Chisholm took a shot from the point that Malott tipped past Wallstedt for his 15th tally of the year.
With about two minutes left in the contest, Iowa pulled Wallstedt looking for the equalizer. However, it would be Maier sealing the victory with an empty net goal to make it 4-2.
The Wild refused to quit, however. Dakota Mermis pulled Iowa within one with 31 seconds left in the contest. Marco Rossi moved the puck back to the point to Mermis, who lifted a wrist shot that went over the shoulder of Holm and in for his second goal of the year.
With 31 seconds left in the contest, Iowa was simply not able to pressure the Moose, as Manitoba came away with a 4-3 victory.
The Iowa Wild (11-13-4) are off until Wednesday when they welcome the Colorado Eagles (18-8-2). The puck drops at 6:00.
