American Association Daily provides insights, features, and recaps of the action from around the American Association of Professional Baseball League, as well as player and coaching profiles and transactions. In today’s edition of American Association Daily, the Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association name Winnipeg Goldeyes infield Wes Darvill as Player of the Week and Sioux Falls Canaries right-hander Tyler Herron Pitcher of the Week for Week 6.
Player of the Week: Wes Darvill, Winnipeg Goldeyes
The Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association named Winnipeg Goldeyes infielder Wes Darvill as the Player of the Week for Week 6. Darvill hit .444 in seven games with 11 runs scored and 10 runs driven in to earn the honors. Darvill had hits in five of the seven contests, including two three-hit games and a four-hit game.
He began the week with a four-game set against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Tuesday was a double-header to makeup the previous Sunday’s rainout. The infielder went 5-14 in the series, helping the Goldeyes to win three of four. In the double-header, Darvill went 1-3 with a run, homerun, and RBI in the opener, then went 3-3 with a run and an RBI. He was 1-4 in Game 3 before going hitless in the final contest.
Winnipeg then took on Sioux Falls and Darvill had a huge series, going 7-13 with eight runs scored and seven RBI. In the first contest of the series, he was 3-5 with two runs scored, a homer and two RBI in an 11-6 victory. In the second game, Darvill did not have a hit, but he reached base twice, stole two bases and scored two runs. He also drove in a run. On Sunday, the Winnipeg infielder went 4-5 with four runs scored, a homer, and four RBI.
For the week, Darvill was 12-27. He added a double and hit three homers. His .444 batting average was second best in the American Association and his .815 slugging percentage was also second last week. He drove in at least one run in six of the seven games.
Darvill is the first Goldeyes player to receive the Player of the Week honor this season.
Pitcher of the Week: Tyler Herron, Sioux Falls Canaries
The Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association selected Sioux Falls Canaries right-hander Tyler Herron as the Pitcher of the Week for Week 6. Herron went the distance in his one start during the week, earning a win in a 4-1 victory over the St. Paul Saints.
It was truly a masterful performance for Herron. The right-hander retired the first 14 batters he faced, as St. Paul did not have a runner reach until Chesny Young was hit by a pitch with two down in the fifth. Max Murphy followed with the Saints first hit of the game, but Herron got Troy Alexander to pop out to end the inning.
Herron then found himself in a bit of trouble in the sixth when he gave up a hit and a walk with one down, but coolly got a ground out and a fly out to keep St. Paul off the board. In the eighth, a two out single followed by a double gave the Saints two runners in scoring position, but Herron struck out John Silviano to end the threat.
The Saints finally got on the board in the ninth and had the tying run at the plate with two down, but the righty struck out Mikey Reynolds to end the game. Herron went the distance, allowing eight hits, a walk, and one earned run. He struck out a season high eight.
Herron is the first Sioux Falls Canaries pitcher to be given the Pitcher of the Week honors this season.
