David Bergin, Tyler Matzek Honored in Week 10
The Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association have named their Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 10 of the 2018 American Association season. Texas AirHogs starting pitcher Tyler Matzek was named the Pitcher of the Week, while Sioux Falls Canaries first baseman David Bergin earned the honors as the Player of the Week.
Player of the Week: David Bergin, Sioux Falls Canaries
Sioux Falls Canaries slugger David Bergin was named as Player of the Week in the American Association by the Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association. Bergin hit .462 in Week 10, tied for second best in the league, scoring seven runs and driving in nine, including hitting three home runs.
Bergin played in all seven of the Canaries games during the week, starting off with the concluding contest of a four-game set against the Fargo -Moorhead RedHawks. In that contest, the slugger was 2-4 with a double and an RBI.
Next, Sioux Falls welcomed the Winnipeg Goldeyes for a three-game series, where the slugger was 7-13, including going a perfect 5-5 in the second game of the series. The veteran scored four runs and drove in four while walking twice and adding a double in the three-game set, two of which were won by the Canaries.
Next up for David Bergin was a three-game set against the Chicago Dogs where he started out 0-3, seeing his 16 game hit streak come to an end. However, he would rebound to go 3-8 over the final two games of the series, with all three hits being home runs. Bergin drove in four in the series while scoring three runs.
In all, David Bergin was 12-26 with 2-doubles, 3-homers, 7-runs scored, and 9-RBI. He posted a .548 on-base percentage and had a .885 slugging percentage. His 1.433 OPS was second best in the American Association.
David Bergin is the second Sioux Falls Canaries player to be honored this season, joining Cesilio Pimentel who was named the American Association’s top pitcher in Week 8.
Pitcher of the Week: Tyler Matzek, Texas AirHogs
Tyler Matzek of the Texas AirHogs was named as the American Association Pitcher of the Week on Monday. The left-hander only made one start during the week, but he made the most of it, tossing a no-hitter against the Kansas City T-Bones for 7.1 innings before finally seeing his streak come to an end.
Matzek was absolutely dominant, allowing two walks in the first inning, then retiring 16 in a row. His streak came to an end when he yielded a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh, but a double play erased that runner continuing his no-hit bid into the eighth. With one down, Keith Curcio finally snapped the run, doubling into left field for the first hit of the ball game.
Matzek left after eight innings. The left-hander allowed that lone hit, walked three, and struck out eight. Of his 105 pitches, 69 were for strikes. Unfortunately, his team would not produce any run support for him as Kansas City won in 11 innings, 1-0.
Tyler Matzek is the first Texas AirHogs player to receive player or pitcher of the week honors this season.
