Cougars, Dogs Split Double-Header
Jack Fox allowed one run in five innings to lead the Kane County Cougars to a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Dogs in the opener of their double-header, but Jeff Kinley provided sweet revenge in the second, allowing one run in five innings to lead Chicago to a 5-2 win. This gave the teams a split of their double-header.
In the opener, Kane County scored two runs in the top of the first inning and this game was all but over. Jimmy Kerrigan set the stage, blasting a two-run shot, his 17th of the year. It was all Fox from there, as he allowed seven hits and no walks while striking out nine. Ryan Richardson tossed a scoreless sixth and Logan Nissen earned his seventh save of the season.
Kerrigan finished with two hits for the Cougars. K.C. Hobson and Grant Kay each had two hits for Chicago.
In the second game, the Cougars jumped out in front with a run in the top of the first thanks to a two out home run by Cornelius Randolph, his fifth of the year. However, Chicago used the long ball to tie the score in the bottom of the second as Stevie Wilkerson went deep for his fourth of the year. Two batters later, Trent Bauer doubled home Kay to put Chicago on top for good.
The only hit against Kinley was the first inning homerun. He walked one and struck out seven. Tanner Lawson came on in the seventh to finish off the game for his second save of the year. Bauer and Kay each had two hits in the contest.
Minier Outduels Smith to Lead Saltdogs
It was a classic pitching matchup on Monday in Milwaukee, as Greg Minier outdueled Milkmen starter Myles Smith, leading the Lincoln Saltdogs to a 4-1 victory. Minier allowed five hits and two walks while striking out seven and 6.0 innings. Smith gave up three runs in 6.0 innings, striking out seven as well.
Lincoln took the lead in the top of the second on an RBI double by Matt Goodheart, but the Milkmen tied the score when Bryan Torres tripled home Logan Trowbridge in the bottom of the third. The score remained tied until the top of the sixth when Lincoln took the lead for good. A triple by Welington Dotel brought home Josh Altmann, and Dotel scored on a Pat Caufield single. Altmann closed out the scoring with an RBI double in the seventh.
Steffon Moore earned his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Altmann, Dotel, and Caufield each finished with two hits for the Saltdogs.
