The Minor League Sports Report has selected their honorees for the second week of the 2019 American Association season. For the week of May 20-26, St. Paul Saints right-hander Eddie Medina was chosen as the Pitcher of the Week, while Chicago Dogs outfielder Tony Rosselli was selected as the Player of the Week.
Player of the Week – Week 2: Tony Rosselli, Chicago Dogs
The Chicago Dogs Tony Rosselli was selected as the Player of the Week by the Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association after posting a .455 average in six games during the week. Rosselli hit 4 homers, including three in one game, added 8 RBI and drove in 6 during the week. That has helped to move him to the top of the league in batting average (.458).
In six games, the Dogs outfielder was 10-22. He started the week with a rainout on May 21, then went 2-6 in the double-header that followed the next day. On May 23, Rosselli had a huge game, going 3-5 with 3 runs, 3 homers, and 5 RBI. That included a home run in the 10th that gave his team back the lead as they went onto win, 7-6.
Rosselli and the Dogs then moved onto Milwaukee where he put up a perfect 4-4 with 2 runs, a homer and 2 RBI in the opening contest of that series. The outfielder finished 5-11 in the series, scoring 3 runs and driving in 3.
Pitcher of the Week – Week 2: Eddie Medina, St. Paul Saints
For the second straight week, a member of the St. Paul Saints earned the Pitcher of the Week honors. This time it was right-hander Eddie Medina, who posted a 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA in two starts during the week.
The week got off on the right foot for Medina when he tossed six shutout innings against the Chicago Dogs on May 22. After a rain delay forced a double-header, Medina saved his bullpen by tossing six outstanding innings. He allowed 3 hits while striking out 6. The righty threw 98 pitches, 58 of which were strikes.
He found himself in trouble in two frames, the second and the third. In the second he loaded the bases before getting a fly out to end the frame. In the third, a double and a one out walk put two on with one out, but he struck out the next two batters to get out of the frame. Medina retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.
Medina returned to the hill on May 26, pitching on three days rest, yet still was able to give his team 6.1 innings of shutout ball. Medina allowed 8 hits but walked none, while striking out 8. He threw 93 pitches, 61 of which were strikes. He retired the final six batters he faced.
Overall, Medina tossed 12.1 innings, allowed 11 hits, walked 3 and struck out 14. Medina narrowly edged out the Chicago Dogs Luke Westphal.
