Etheridge, Canaries Batter Apollos in Shutout Victory
SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Canaries pounded 18 hits in a resounding 16-0 win over the Houston Apollos Wednesday at The Birdcage. The Birds will go for their first sweep of the season Thursday at 7:05 pm.
Ty Culbreth (2-0) turned in a five-inning, four-hit gem to help power the Canaries staff to their first shutout of the year. Jackson Maynard carded four innings of one-hit, scoreless relief to earn his first Sioux Falls save.
The offense gave the staff plenty of room for error, not that the hurlers needed it. The 16 runs are the highest single-game total in the American Association this season. The Canaries belted nine doubles, also a single-game Association high in 2021. The 18 hits are the second-highest single-game total in the American Association this year.
Trey Michalczewski, Logan Landon and Mike Hart all homered as the Birds blitzed an overwhelmed Apollos pitching staff. After entering the game in the second inning for an injured Angelo Altavilla, Nathan Etheridge authored a brilliant five-hit game. Etheridge scored three runs. Landon, Hart, Jabari Henry, and Michalczewski all scored twice. Michalczewski has gone deep in three of the last four games.
Yosmel Naranjo (0-2) suffered the loss after being driven from the game in the second inning. He was credited with eight runs (seven earned). Blake Berry enjoyed the only two-hit night for Houston.
Sioux Falls will go for the sweep behind RHP Eddie Medina (0-0, 3.00 ERA) Thursday at 7:05 pm. Zaqueil Puentes (0-0, 9.00 ERA) is expected to start for the Apollos.
Thursday will be Dazed and Confused Night at The Birdcage. It will also be Thirsty Thursday. Fans can get two 16 oz domestic beers for just $10 or two 16 oz craft/import beers for only $12.
