Explorers Hold Off Monarchs, Cougars Extend Winning Streak

Explorers Hang on to Down Monarchs
The Sioux City Explorers jumped out to a 5-2 lead, then watched the Kansas City Monarchs rally to pull within one, but the Explorers would eventually hold on for a 7-6 victory. This came despite a 23-minute delay caused when the power went out.
Tyler Beardsley had a huge game for Sioux City, allowing three runs in 6.1 innings, while striking out 12. Matt Pobereyko came on in the eighth and recorded the final four outs for his second save of the season. José Sermo went 2-3 with three runs scored, a homer, and an RBI. Michael Lang had three hits and two runs driven in. Casey Gillaspie had a big game for Kansas City, going 2-4 with his second homerun of the season and he drove in three runs.

Canaries Hold Off Apollos
The Sioux Falls Canaries jumped out to a 6-3 lead through two innings, then hung on for an 8-7 victory over the Houston Apollos. Trey Michalczewski led the way for Sioux Falls with two hits and three runs driven in. He hit his second homerun of the season, one of two homers hit by the Canaries on the evening. Carlos Pimentel earned the victory despite giving up five runs in six innings. He struck out 10.
Nick Anderson continues to be red-hot for Houston, going 2-4 with a run scored. Blake Berry had four hits, including his first homerun of the season, and Alvaro Gonzalez also homered as part of a two hit performance.

Gonzalez Dominates Milkmen in Goldeyes Victory
Joey Gonzalez tossed six shutout innings, striking out six to lead the Winnipeg Goldeyes to a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Milkmen. Max Murphy provided the big blow of the game, a two-run blast in the sixth inning that extended the lead to three. In the ninth, Milwaukee looked to rally against Dan Kubiuk, as Brett Vertigan reached on an error to start the frame and scored on a Logan Trowbridge base hit. The Milkmen would bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but Ken Frosch struck out David Washington to close out the game. For Frosch, it was his first save the season.
Matt Solter was solid for Milwaukee, allowing two earned runs in seven innings while striking out 11. Vertigan and Tony Rosselli each had two hits for the Milkmen.

McGovern Dominates to Lead RedHawks
One day after being named Picture of the Week, Kevin McGovern picked up where he left off, allowing one run on three hits in seven innings to earn his second victory of the season, as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Chicago Dogs, 6-1. McGovern struck out nine. Correlle Prime was 2-2 with two runs scored, two RBI, two walks, and a homer. John Silviano also homered for the RedHawks, his second blast of the season.
Brennan Metzger had one of the four hits for Chicago and scored their only run. Danny Mars had the lone RBI.

Mariot Tames Saltdogs
Michael Mariot allowed just one hit in seven innings to lead the Cleburne Railroaders to a 4-1 victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs. Mariot had a no-hitter going through the first six innings, but Josh Altmann broke it up with one down in the bottom of the seventh inning, hitting his first homer of the year. Tyler Wilson came on in the ninth to close out the game for his third save of the season. Grant Buck homered and drove in two for the Railroaders.
Kyle Kinman was outstanding for Lincoln as well, allowing four hits and no runs in six innings. He struck out six.

Cougars Extend Winning Streak to Five
Josh Tols tossed six shutout innings to help lead the Kane County Cougars to a 5-1 victory over the Gary Southshore RailCats. That was the fifth straight victory for Kane County, who moved to 5-0 on the road the season. Josh Allen was 2-5 with a run scored and an RBI and Mitch Reeves drove in a pair of runs for the Cougars.
Raymond Jones had three hits for Gary. Nikola Vasic scored the lone run for the team.
