Explorers Win Fourth Straight, Washington Homers Twice, Maris, McCanna Honored

In today’s edition, Robert Pannier recaps the two games in the American Association on Monday, including the Winnipeg Goldeyes downing the Milwaukee Milkmen and the Sioux City Explorers continue to roll with the victory over the Kansas City Monarchs. Washington Homers Twice in Goldeyes Victory
David Washington homered twice and drove in four to help lead the Winnipeg Goldeyes to an 11-3 victory over the Milwaukee Milkmen. Milwaukee took the lead in the top of the first, but Winnipeg responded with eight unanswered runs, including three in the bottom of the first and four in the second. Washington homered in both frames, giving the Goldeyes the early advantage.
Starter Luis Ramirez did the rest, allowing three runs in 8.1 innings to earn his 10th victory of the season. Ramirez struck out 11. Washington finished 4-5 with three runs scored and four RBI. Eric Rivera had three hits, including his third homerun of the season, and drove in two. Logan Hill also went deep for the Goldeyes.
Myles Smith struggled for Milwaukee, giving up seven runs in 1.2 innings. Logan Trowbridge had three hits and scored a run.

Zawada Keeps Explorers Rolling
The Sioux City Explorers scored five unanswered runs to start off Monday’s contest, then held on for an 8-4 victory over the Kansas City Monarchs. The Explorers took the lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Danry Vasquez and a sacrifice fly by Sebastian Zawada. Chase Harris homered in the second to extend the lead to three and Zawada drove in another with an RBI double in the bottom of the third. Gabe Snyder added an RBI single with two down in the frame and Sioux City looked like they were in complete command.
Blaine Hardy started for the Explorers and shut down Kansas City through the first three frames, but back-to-back home runs by Casey Gillaspie and Gio Brusa in the top of the fourth pulled the Monarchs within three. An inning later, Kansas City added two more runs, making this a one run game. However, Zawada added another RBI double in the bottom of the fifth and Snyder drove home Zawada with an RBI single. Sioux City added one more run in the sixth to close out the scoring.
Zawada finished 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Hardy earned the victory, his third of the year. Gillaspie and Brusa each had two hits for the Monarchs.
