Garkow Dominates Monarchs to Help Canaries Snap Skid
SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Canaries (19-26) won the series finale vs. the Kansas City Monarchs (27-18) by a final score of 5-1 at The Birdcage Thursday. The Birds snapped an eight-game losing streak with the victory.
Tyler Garkow (2-4) was credited with the win for the Canaries. Garkow pitched a one-run gem, allowing four hits and one run (one earned). He struck out nine Monarchs. Nick Travieso (4-6) was credited with the loss for the Monarchs. He pitched six innings, allowing five hits and three runs (three earned). Colby Wyatt earned his second save of the season by entering in relief to strand the bases loaded. He struck out five while carrying the Canaries over the finish line.
The Canaries got to Travieso for three runs in the third and fourth before Cade and Nick Gotta scored on wild pitches to put the game out of reach in the seventh.The Birds offense was led by the veteran Jordan Ebert, who recorded two hits and scored a run. Jabari Henry recorded a hit and an RBI. Cade Gotta, Shamoy Christopher and Angelo Altavilla all notched one hit.
Wyatt Ulrich recorded an RBI single in the third and extended his streak to 27 straight games and his on-base streak to 31 straight games. The all-time hit streak record in the American Association is 34 straight games, a mark set by Stephen Douglas of El Paso and Grand Prairie in 2011. Douglas also holds the all-time consecutive games on-base record with 56 straight.
The North Division-leading Chicago Dogs (28-18) will come to The Birdcage for a three-game series starting at 7:05 Friday. Game 1 will feature RHP Jordan Kipper (3-2, 7.17 ERA) for the Dogs and RHP Angel Ventura (3-4, 6.66 ERA) for the Birds.
It is Big Lebowski night on Friday! The Birds will abide in The Birdcage and will change their team name to “The Dudes” and have special uniforms — later to be raffled by fans — as we celebrate the 1998 slacker crime comedy cult classic starring Jeff Bridges as “The Dude.” In honor of His Dudeness, fans who come to the game in a robe will receive discounted admission.
