SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes (1-2) by a score of 8-1 at Sioux Falls Stadium Thursday evening.
The Canaries took the season-opening series with the win, despite being out-hit by the Goldeyes in all three contests.
Sioux Falls opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Ed Reichenbach hit a two-out, three run home run to right field.
The home side increased their lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning when Logan Landon hit an RBI double to centre field, just out of the reach of Jay Gonzalez.
The Canaries added a fifth run in the bottom of the sixth when Charlie Valerio came home on a Michael Hart sacrifice fly to right-centre field.
Back-to-back home runs by Landon and Troy Alexander in the bottom of the seventh inning made the score 7-0 Sioux Falls.
Hart led off the eighth inning with the Canaries’ fourth long ball of the evening giving them an eight-run cushion.
Winnipeg broke Sioux Falls’ bid for a shutout in the top of the ninth inning when Dakota Conners singled home Max Murphy to make the score 8-1.
