Goldeyes Fall in 11, Swept in Double-Header by Milkmen
JACKSON, TN – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (5-12) lost both games of a double header to the Milwaukee Milkmen at The Ballpark at Jackson on Saturday night, dropping the opener 9-2 and the nightcap 6-3 in 11 innings.
Both games were originally scheduled for seven innings.
In game one, the Milkmen took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out, two-run home run to left-centre from David Washington.
Washington made it 3-0 with an RBI single in the top of the third, and the Milkmen opened an 8-0 advantage after scoring five times in the fourth after there were two outs and no one on base. Anibal Sierra reached on an infield single and scored on Brett Vertigan’s triple down the left field line. Logan Trowbridge and Adam Brett Walker chipped in back-to-back RBI singles, while Washington capped the frame with a two-run home run that bounced off the top, and then over, the centre field fence.
Raul Navarro led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and scored the Goldeyes’ first run on a Tyler Hill groundout.
Walker slugged a solo shot to left-centre with two outs in the top of the sixth that made it 9-1.
Navarro’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth cashed in a Max Murphy triple and provided the game’s final margin.
David Holmberg (2-1) started for the Milkmen and picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings. Holmberg walked one and struck out two.
Joey Gonzalez (1-2) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits in four innings. Gonzalez walked one and struck out three.
In game two, Milwaukee (10-7) again got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the top of the first on a two-run home run to left-centre from Walker and a two-out, RBI single from Aaron Hill.
The score remained 3-0 into the bottom of the sixth when the Goldeyes rallied to tie the game after there were two outs and no one on base. Navarro singled through the right side and scored from first on a double to right-centre from Logan Hill. After Kevin Lachance reached on an infield single, Hill and Lachance engineered a double steal of second and home. Dakota Conners then lined a two-strike single to centre that plated Lachance with the tying run.
Milwaukee regained the lead in the top of the 11th on a two-out, RBI double from Walker. Washington followed with a two-run home run to left-centre, and finished the double header with eight hits, three home runs, and seven RBI.
Zach Hartman (2-0) earned the win in relief in game two, while Ken Frosch (1-2) took the loss for Winnipeg.
Karch Kowalczyk worked a scoreless bottom of the 11th to pick up his third save.
Mike Webb started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision in his professional debut. Webb allowed three earned runs on nine hits in six innings. Webb walked none and struck out six.
Matthew Solter started for the Milkmen in game two and also took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings. Solter walked three and struck out five.
Cory Thompson pitched a career-high four shutout innings in relief for the Goldeyes, striking out six.
Sonny Ulliana also made his professional debut in the second game, and collected his first career base hit with a double off the left field wall in the bottom of the ninth.
The Goldeyes are off Sunday and Monday before welcoming the Kane County Cougars for a three-game series beginning Tuesday night at The Ballpark at Jackson. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
The Goldeyes will continue to monitor the reopening of the Canada/US border and assess a potential return to Shaw Park in 2021.
