Gotta Remains Red Hot as Canaries Edge Goldeyes Late
JACKSON, Tenn. – Tyler Garkow and Grady Wood starred on the mound as the Canaries won the series vs. Winnipeg Sunday. The two hurlers combined for nine innings of one-run ball to power the 3-1 Birds win.
The series win was the fifth in the last six for the Birds, who rallied from an 8-3 loss in Game 1 to take the set. Garkow led the way in Game 3 with 5.1 innings of four-hit, eight-strikeout dominance. Wood (1-0) entered in the sixth and notched the win after carving three strikeouts and allowing three hits.
Nick Gotta continued a truly impressive streak in the box. The infielder reached in each of his final ten plate appearances vs. the Goldeyes. The mind-boggling streak helped engineer another successful day for the most potent offense in the league.
The Birds took their first lead in the first inning on an RBI base hit by Charlie Valerio to score Wyatt Ulrich. The knock came with two outs. It was Valerio once again in the eighth knocking a two-out single to start a rally that culminated with RBI base hits from Jordan Ebert and Shamoy Christopher. Christopher finished the game with three hits.
Winnipeg starter Joey Gonzalez went toe-to-toe with Garkow on the mound for most of the afternoon. He allowed seven hits and one run in 6.1 innings of work. Kyle Thomas (0-2) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing the Birds rally in the eighth.
The Canaries will be back home on Tuesday, June 15th to start a series against the Miluakee Milkmen. Starters for both teams are TBD.
