Jake Smith Named Inglasco ECHL Player of the Week
The Iowa Heartlanders earned their first Inglasco ECHL Player of the Week honors on Wednesday when forward Jake Smith was selected. Smith had a spectacular week, scoring four goals and adding two assists in three games to help lead the Heartlanders to a 1-0-2 record, extending their consecutive point streak to five straight games.
It started with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Kansas City Mavericks last Wednesday. Despite taking the loss, the team made an impressive comeback. After falling behind 3-0 in the first period, Smith rallied the team, scoring two goals in the next frame to help tie the score. He added an assist on the third goal, helping to force overtime where the team fell 24 seconds into the frame.
On Friday, Iowa jumped out to a 2-1 lead over the in the Indy Fuel, thanks to the eighth goal of the season by Smith. The Fuel rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the third period, but Smith provided an assist on the tying goal by Adrien Beraldo that forced overtime once again. There, Indy pulled out the victory just before the three-minute mark.
On Saturday, Smith delivered a huge goal with 68 seconds left in the contest to give Iowa a 2-1 victory over the Fuel. Clinging to a one goal lead with a little less than eight minutes left in the contest, the Heartlanders were unable to keep Indy off the scoreboard, and this contest looked like it was heading to overtime as well. However, Smith made an improbable shot from a terrible angle to give Iowa the 2-1 victory.
Smith has been on an absolute tear of late, scoring eight goals over his last five games. In 15 games this season he now has nine goals and seven assists for 16 points.
Jake Smith will be looking to continue his impressive run on Friday when the team travels to take on the Toledo Walleye. Iowa place three games this weekend, with contests on Saturday and Sunday in Wheeling.
