Lack of Support Wastes McGovern Gem, 2-1
GARY, IN – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (38-28) lost 2-1 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats at US Steel Yard on Tuesday night.
With the Goldeyes leading 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth, the RailCats (28-40) loaded the bases with two outs and took a 2-1 lead when John Price Jr. singled through the left side to plate Andy DeJesus and Daniel Gardner. DeJesus opened the inning with a single through the left side and took second when Gardner reached on a sacrifice bunt that resulted in a throwing error. Marcus Mooney sacrificed both runners ahead. Justin Kamplain relieved Cameron McVey and struck out Alex Crosby for the second out of the inning. Randy Santiesteban worked a full count walk to load the bases, setting up Price’s game-winning hit.
Ryan Thurston relieved Andrew Cartier in the top of the ninth and pitched around a Reggie Abercrombie single to record his second save of the year.
Cartier (1-0) earned the win in his RailCats’ debut after recording the final out in the top of the eighth.
The Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Tyler Hill led off the game with a single, stole second, advanced to third on Carlos Garcia’s flyout to centre, and scored on an errant pickoff throw to first by RailCats’ starting pitcher Trevor Lubking.
Goldeyes’ starter Kevin McGovern (9-5) took the loss, allowing two unearned runs on three hits over seven-plus innings. McGovern walked three and struck out seven.
Lubking took a no-decision, allowing one unearned run on four hits in seven and two-thirds innings. Lubking walked two and struck out eight.
