Lincoln Saltdogs Double Up Salina, Extend Stockade Losing Streak to 19
The Salina Stockade losing streak reached 19 Friday night, as the Lincoln Saltdogs doubled up the Stockade 10-5. Randolph Oduber had 3-hits, scored 2-runs, and drove in 2, and Brandon Jacobs drove in 3-runs for the Saltdogs, which ruined a big night for Aaron Olivas, who had 3-hits and scored a run.
Just two-innings into the ballgame, Lincoln had a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, Brendan O’Brien singled to start the frame and then stole second base. Jacobs moved him to third on a ground ball, and he scored on a base hit by Cesar Valera. A single by Curt Smith moved Valera into scoring position, and he scored on a base hit by Tommy Mendonca. That made it 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Saltdogs put four runs on the board. Daschenko Ricardo began the inning with a single and he scored when Oduber drilled his fifth homer of the season to make it 4-0. O’Brien followed by drawing a walk and he moved into scoring position by stealing second and reaching third on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly by Jacobs brought him home to extend the lead to five. Next up was Valera, who doubled into center, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Smith. That made the score 6-0.
With no quit in them, Salina got on the board in the top of the third. Logan Trowbridge led off by hitting his first home run of the season. That made the score 6-1.
Lincoln responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, using the long ball themselves. This time it was Trever Adams, who hit his third homer of the year to extend the lead back to six.
In the top of the fifth, Salina would get another run. Trowbridge seemed to be the catalyst all day long for the Stockade, as he led off the frame with a walk. An error allowed Olivas to reach base and, two batters later, Jesse Baker lined a base hit into the center to score Trowbridge with his second run of the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lincoln Saltdogs virtually put this game away. Christian Ibarra started the inning with a walk and, two batters later, Oduber singled. Ibarra slid into third safely on the throw with Oduber going to second on the play. A base hit by O’Brien brought Ibarra home before Jacobs doubled to score both O’Brien and Oduber. That made the score 10-2.
A lot of teams would’ve quit trailing by eight and in the throes of a long losing streak like this, but there is no off switch for these Salina Stockade. In the top of the seventh, they would put up three runs of their own. A base hit by Olivas with one down got the rally going, before Kewby Meyer singled. Baker was the next batter, and he doubled into the gap to score both runners and cut the deficit to six. He would score when Jimmy Heck grounded a base hit into right field to make the score 10-5. However, that is as close as the visitors would get.
Bennett Parry (1-0) earned his first victory of the season, going 6-innings, allowing 6-hits, 2-walks, and 1-earned run. Brendan O’Brien went 2-4 with 3-runs and an RBI for Lincoln. Randolph Oduber was 3-4 with 2-runs, 2-RBI and his fifth homer of the year. Aaron Olivas led the Salina offense, going 3-5 with a run, and Jesse Baker was 2-5 with a run and 3-RBI.
