Myles Smith Given PURE Performance Pitcher Honors

The Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association announced that Milwaukee Milkmen right-hander Myles Smith has been named the PURE Performance Pitcher of the Week for Week 9 of the 2021 American Association season. Smith tossed a two-hit complete game shutout in a 1-0 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats.

This was a great contest that saw Milwaukee score the only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Smith did the rest from there, holding the RailCats offense down. The right-hander retired the first 13 batters of the game, but found himself in a little trouble when Zach Welz tripled with one out in the top of the fifth inning. Smith got a pop out before walking Jackson Smith to put the go ahead run at first, but struck out Tommy McCarthy to get out of the jam.

Smith allowed a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, but that would be the last RailCats hit of the game. The righty allowed a one-out walk in the ninth, finishing with two hits and two walks allowed. He struck out 10, including at least one in every inning but the second.

The complete-game shutout was the first of his professional career. He threw 118 pitches in the game, 80 for strikes. That moved of the right-hander to 7-3 on the season, lowering his ERA to 3.44.

For earning PURE Performance Pitcher of the Week, Myles Smith will receive a check for $100 from PURE. This is the second time that Smith has been named the PURE Performance Pitcher of the Week honors this season. He also earned the honor back in Week 4. This is the third time that a Milkmen pitcher has earned the honors as David Holmberg won last week.
