Monarchs Down Goldeyes in Opener, Minier, Johnson Earn Weekly Honors

Monarchs Crush Goldeyes
The Kansas City Monarchs blew open a two-run game, scoring four in the sixth and two in the seventh to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes, 12-5. Ryan Grotjohn put Kansas City on top with his fifth homerun of the season in the top of the first, but Winnipeg tied the score in the second on an RBI double by Logan Hill.
The Monarchs began to take command in the fourth when Casey Gillaspie drilled his 17th homerun of the season, a three-run shot, and the team added two more in the fifth on a two run double by Jacob Robson. However, the Goldeyes responded with three in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Jacob Rhinesmith and a two-run single by Kevin Lachance.
That made it a 6-4 game, but Kansas City dominated from there. Mallex Smith delivered an RBI double in the sixth and Kevin Santa followed with a two run double. Santa scored on an error to extend the lead to six. The Monarchs added two more in the seventh.
Brian Glowicki earned the victory, tossing 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. Grotjohn finished 3-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Gillaspie had three hits, scored two runs, and drove in three and Smith had three hits and drove in two runs. Raul Navarro and Lachance each had two hits for the Goldeyes.

This Week in the Association and Minor League Sports Report named Lincoln Saltdogs left-hander Greg Minier as the American Association Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Minier tossed seven shutout innings in a 3-0 victory over the Cleburne Railroaders… This Week in the Association and Minor League Sports Report named Kane County Cougars infielder Sherman Johnson as the American Association Player of the Week. Johnson hit .529 and posted a .682 on base percentage during the week… Winnipeg Goldeyes right-hander Luis Ramirez failed in his fourth straight appearance to try to win his league-leading 11th victory. Ramirez has struggled in those four starts, giving up 21 earned runs in 20 innings pitched.
