FARGO, ND – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (16-21) beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 9-5 at Newman Outdoor Field on Wednesday night.

The Goldeyes took early control of the game with a five-run top of the third.  Austin Rei drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third when Tyler Hill chopped a double down the left field line.  Jay Gonzalez singled home Rei with a line drive to left.  After Max Murphy walked to load the bases, Kyle Martin lined a three-run double to left-centre.  Raul Navarro plated Martin with an RBI double down the right field line.

The Goldeyes had second and third with two outs in the top of the fourth when the RedHawks (22-18) elected to intentionally walk Martin.  Navarro then lined a single to right-centre on an 0-2 count that scored Gonzalez and Murphy to make it 7-0.

Fargo-Moorhead stormed back with a five-run bottom of the fourth.  Dylan Kelly singled home Jordan George, while John Silviano came home on a two-out, wild pitch.  Alex Boxwell and Manuel Boscan hit back-to-back RBI singles.  Kevin Krause then drove in Boscan with a double down the left field line.

Winnipeg extended the lead to 8-5 in the top of the sixth when Murphy smacked an opposite field solo home run to right-centre.

Murphy made it 9-5 in the top of the eighth with an RBI double.  Going into the at bat, Murphy had a single, double, and home run on the night, and came within several feet of hitting for the cycle when he was thrown out at third base on a relay from RedHawks’ shortstop Sam Dexter.

Kyle Thomas (1-2) pitched three scoreless innings from the fifth through the seventh to pick up the win in relief.

RedHawks’ starter Bret Helton (3-3) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits in five innings.  Helton walked three and struck out two.

Goldeyes’ starter Mike Webb took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in four innings.  Webb walked two and struck out none.

Travis Seabrooke and Jose Jose each pitched a scoreless relief inning.  The Goldeyes’ defence turned a season-high four double plays.  Gonzalez had two hits and has hit safely in eight consecutive games.

The Goldeyes will continue to monitor the reopening of the Canada/US border and assess a potential return to Shaw Park in 2021.
