Railroaders, Monarchs, Dogs Win in 11, Pina Drives in Five, Explorers Edge Saltdogs

In today’s edition, Robert Pannier recaps the six games in the American Association on Saturday, including the Cleburne Railroaders, Kansas City Monarchs, and Chicago Dogs all winning in 11 innings, and Leobaldo Pina drives in five to lead the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to victory.

Pina Drives in Five in RedHawks Victory
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks found themselves trailing by four after the first inning, but battled back with four runs in the third and four in the fifth on their way to a 12-5 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries. Leobaldo Piña led the way with a homer and five RBI. Sam Dexter had three hits and drove in two runs and Manuel Boscan and Kevin Krause scored three runs for Fargo. Bret Helton earned the victory, despite giving up six walks in five innings.
Trey Michalczewski homered as part of a two-hit performance for the Canaries. He drove in three runs. Nick Gotta also went deep for Sioux Falls.

Explorers Edge Saltdogs Behind Zawada
Sebastian Zawada homered and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Sioux City Explorers to a 4-3 victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs. Sioux City took a 3-0 lead only to watch Lincoln battled back with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. However, Chase Harris drove home the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nate Samson had two hits and also homered for the Explorers.
Ryan Long and Justin Byrd each had two hits for Lincoln. Forrestt Allday went 1-4.

Trowbridge, Zimmerman Lead Milkmen to Victory
Ryan Zimmerman allowed a single unearned run in seven innings and Logan Trowbridge homered and walked twice to lead the Milwaukee Milkmen to a 6-1 victory over the Kane County Cougars. Milwaukee scored three runs in the third and three in the seventh. Zimmerman allowed four hits and three walks while striking out 11. Trowbridge was a perfect 1-1 with two walks and two runs driven in. Christian Correa also went deep for Milwaukee.
Nick Santoro drove in the lone run for Kane County. Koby Bishop was solid for the Cougars, allowing three runs in five innings.
Railroaders Down Apollos in 11
Ramon Hernandez drove home the winning run with one down in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead the Cleburne Railroaders to a 6-5 victory over the Houston Apollos. Tyler Ryan led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice. The next two hitters were walked intentionally before Hernandez lined the first pitch he saw for a base hit. Hernandez finished with two hits and three runs driven in, including hitting his sixth homerun of the season. Cleburne hit two other homeruns in the contest.
Alvaro Gonzalez remains red-hot for Houston, going 3-4 with two runs, two RBI, and his fifth homerun of the season. Hudson Bilodeau went 2-6 with two runs scored.

Gillasapie Walk-Off Homer Wins Contest for Monarchs
Casey Gillaspie hit a two-run homer with two down in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Kansas City Monarchs a 5-3 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Ryan Grotjohn walked to start the inning and looked like he would be left stranded when the next two batters were retired, but Gillaspie turned on a 2-1 pitch for a two-run shot to give Kansas City their ninth the victory out of the last 10 games. Gillaspie finished 2-3 with a run, two RBI, and to walk. Darnell Sweeney also homered for the Monarchs.
Darren Seferina had a big day for Winnipeg, going 2-5 with his third homerun of the season and two runs driven in. Logan Hill also had two hits.

Lidge Drives Home Game-Winner in 11th
Ryan Lidge delivered a walkoff single in the bottom of the 11th to give the Chicago Dogs a 6-5 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats. K.C. Hobson reached on an error to start the inning and moved to second on a base hit by T.J. Bennett. After a wild pitch moved up both runners, Lidge single to score Hobson to give Chicago the victory. Lidge finished 4-6 with three runs driven in. Bennett shined in his second game since coming out of retirement, going 2-5, including hitting his second homerun.
MJ Rookard went 2-6 with his first homerun of the season and two RBI for Gary. Tyler Van Marter went 1-4 with two runs scored and a run driven in.

Chicago Dogs catcher Ryan Lidge extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games, the longest in the American Association this season… Both Max Murphy and Raul Navarro extended their hitting streaks to 13 straight games for the Winnipeg Goldeyes. That is tied for the second-longest streak in the league this year. Navarro has reached base in 23 consecutive games, the longest such streak this year… Sioux City Explorers closer Matt Pobereyko earned his 10th save of the season which leads the American Association…The Gary SouthShore RailCats lost their first extra inning game of the year on Saturday. The team had won their first five such contests.
