Railroaders Score Early But Cannot Hold Lead in Loss to Winnipeg
CLEBURNE, Tex. (June 17, 2021) – The Cleburne Railroaders scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning but just one the rest of the way, as the Winnipeg Goldeyes completed the three-game sweep with a 7-4 win on Thursday night at The Depot at Cleburne Station.
It was a promising start for Cleburne (11-16), as the Railroaders got run-scoring hits from Noah Vaughan, Zach Nehrir and Hunter Clanin to seize a 3-0 lead. But the Goldeyes (11-14) answered with a pair of runs in the third and four innings to take a 4-3 advantage. A single from Tyler Hill combined with an error brought home the first run of the night for Winnipeg, with a two-out double from Max Murphy plating the second. Back-to-back home runs from Kevin Lachance and Wes Darvill put the Goldeyes in front in the fourth.
Kyle Martin cranked the third Winnipeg home run of the night leading off the sixth inning, pushing the lead out to 5-3.
Cleburne got the run right back in the bottom of the inning via a sacrifice fly from Tyler Ryan, but the Railroaders left the bases loaded in the inning and wouldn’t threaten again the rest of the way. Martin added the final two runs of the evening for the Goldeyes with a two-run single in the top of the ninth.
Pete Perez (1-0) picked up the win for Winnipeg, working five innings while allowing three runs on six hits. Garrett Alexander (2-4) took the loss for Cleburne, surrendering five runs, four earned, over six innings. Alexander matched a season high with eight strikeouts on the evening.
Michael Krauza fired two innings of scoreless relief for Cleburne, and Kyle Chavez induced a double play from the only man he faced in the ninth.
Jose Jose picked up his second save of the year with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning.
The Railroaders continue the homestand with a three-game series against the Houston Apollos. First pitch of Friday’s series opener is scheduled for 7:06 PM.
